Versions: a delicious Subversion client

Source code versioning isn't something that usually gets attention here on TUAW. Subversion, the versioning tool of choice, is largely accessed via the command line to check in and out source, however, the people behind Made by Sofa decided that Subversion needed a nice looking client, so they built one. Versions is just entering a private beta, so be sure to sign up if you are interested in seeing what all the fuss is about. Their website is a little light on the details at the moment, but they promise that you will be able to doing everything that you could do via the command line with Versions, and enjoy a nice GUI to boot.

What's not to like?

Thanks, Andreas Creten.

Has anyone heard of ZigVersion? Check it out at http://zigzig.com/

I personally thought it was a fairly nice client. May not be as nice as Versions, but it gets the job done.

SmartSVN looks very nice; I wasn't aware of it. Thanks!

This prompts me to think that there may be two levels of Subversion users: those who just checkout, update, commit, and those who manage branches. The former are probably well served by less full featured but very easy to use systems such as SCplugin, while the latter definitely need a more powerful tool such as SmartSVN.

The next question being, which user is Versions intended for?

(And, will Versions exit beta with a new icon? Even if it was a totally independent design concept, it *does* look too much like Coda and 9rules. Regardless of who got there first, it's nice to have a distinct look. The use of multiple leaves to represent branch management is a nice conceptual idea, though.)

scplugin is revving up but it still lacks a repos. browser. Many users which are using a GUI client will require this. I see they finally updated the home page and made an official release. I will definitely check out the new version but I will stick with SmartSVN (Java based but keeps my tech support calls to a minimum)

Hi,

wow... when do people finally realize that subversion stinks? Only real decentral tools like git, bitkeeper, monotone and co are really good SCM tools.

Btw: merging is one of the easiest tasks for git.

ay, really looking forward for a new svn client on mac os x. besides that: the icon is a rip-off of Coda (http://www.panic.com/coda/) and the logo of 9rules (http://9rules.com/).

Hopefully I can replace svnX with this.

I just hope they add decent support for merging. As the main 'go to guy' for fixing other peoples screw ups in subversion, I really hope they do this right.
