iPhone Application List
Though it's clear that many folks were pretty disappointed in the whole Web 2.0 is the iPhone SDK thing, a few designers have already started to build "applications" for the iPhone. We've already mentioned a Digg application from David Cann; now that one and many others are being gathered on a new website called simply iPhone Application List. There are already iPhone implementations of AOL IM, a basic feed reader, Twitter, YouTube, and more. And since they're written for Safari on the iPhone, you can already see (and use) them with Safari on the Mac or Windows. These apps give a better idea of just what kind of things will presumably be possible on the iPhone, even though they're not the full applications most of us (developers included) wanted to see.[via Digg]

They have Youtube listed as an app, but the iPhone won't play flash media files.

That's mobile YouTube. Those videos might play on iPhone.

Um, seeing as they work in safari, and are standards compliant websites, they also work in any fully featured smartphone (like, uh, the n95) albeit with a little less polish... (does this mean you could run an os x 'app' on a windows mobile device??? ;-) )

I thought I heard with the youtube announcement for Apple TV that the library was being converted to H.264 MP4. This would enable the content to be played on your iPhone.

Hey, just as a heads up. Newer Nokia Series 60 phones, such as the N and E series (N95, N73, N93, etc), can also take advantage of these web apps, as the Nokia browser is also a KHTML/WebKit browser.
Over at Howard Forums in the S60 section, we've been testing several of these out and they work mostly fine, although the different screen sizes sometimes cause confusion.

Liam: Absolutely. These apps should 'run' on any smartphone with a modern web browser.
Other phones are unlikely to handle the "automatically call this number" functionality, though - that looks like it will use an iPhone-specific syntax, or perhaps something along the lines of the rarely-used "call://" markup.

Just did a little delving and Google Gears works with WebKit. If it works with WebKit it's only a matter of time before it works with Safari ergo the iPhone.
This all bodes well for the application layer of the iPhone. Very well indeed.
I see a veritable mobile apps land grab opening up before us. Woo hoo!

Same exact thing as modmyiphone.com/apps, which has been around longer.

It has been stated that anything that can be ran on Safari on a computer can run on Safari on the iPhone. Of course I am sure that it is all a lie but I like to live in a dream world. :)

You'll also find a master list at iPhonewidgetlist.com. I think at least it's a little more atractive with some iphone line art graphics and all. Check out the why page for a little speculation in what to expect.

Has the existence of Flash on iPhone been officially finalized? Even if Steve doesn't agree with them, I'm not sure if it's worth using iPhone as a weapon against them, it's kind of a "poison pill" maneuver. Too many sites use it and designers like knowing it's there, it is basically installed on all web-browser-capable devices. That's part of why it is used for video, it wins on ubiquity, all computers and not just half that has Quicktime or half that has WMP, serving both QT and WMP instead of just Flash is a wrench in the works and isn't as easy for the user either.

I think there are going to be thousands of iPhone specific (or optimized) web apps coming out. I, as a developer, would love to hear what apps people want developed for the iPhone. So I've created a digg like site where the best web apps/ideas go to the front page. www.iphonecream.com. I'm trying to get input on it so I can improve it.
