iPhone Crowd Control

So, any of you as hyped up and anxious to get their hands on a iPhone as I am? Well, if you're reading this I'm guessing you probably are. For those of you who are counting the moments until that sleek, shiny block of touch-screen goodness is actually in your hands, I have a word of warning for you -- especially if you intend to line up early and be the first kid on your block to have a new iPhone. This warning comes via the safety-minded folks over at the Boy Genius Report wherein they feature a document from "official" channels at AT&T which outlines how retail store managers are to handle the teeming masses who will no doubt be lining up early for the device come June 29th.

Among the methods featured in the document to help ease the situation and control the crowd, is an outline of a mock conversation where AT&T store managers explain to the stores near them why they need to stay open late and what steps they will be taking to help ensure the crowds don't spill into the surrounding stores and do all kinda damage. The document also reveals the super-secret method that will actually accomplish this miraculous controlling of the crowd. What is this miracle you may wonder? Stanchions. Yes, the proverbial "velvet rope" they use to keep people in line at events across America will be standing guard and providing security for the giant iPhone launch event.

Having been at a few Apple retail store events and openings (including the first one at the Glendale Galleria) I can attest to the fact that when Apple does almost anything, crowds of devoted users do show up -- and in really big numbers. For something like the iPhone, which really isn't just for Mac people but for anyone interested in a cool new device, I can only imagine how big the crowds are going to be. Reading this document doesn't really fill me with confidence that AT&T really has a complete grasp of what they're getting into here. I hope they do because we sure don't want a repeat of the iBook debacle from a couple years ago. So, just so I can get a rough count and maybe help AT&T realize the scope of this launch, how many of you are planning to line up early for an iPhone?

I plan to pay someone to stand in line at one of the 2 Apple stores in Austin. I'll have them call me to take their place shortly before they get waited on. :)

I am going to be lining up with my brother 24 hours in advance the local Apple store. There is a corporate AT&T store in the same mall, so double the chances.

I have a feeling there will be less 8 gig models, and I want to make sure I get one.

On Apple manufacturing Hype:

I was going to give them a "pass" on this until this week; *they* haven't been writing story after story on the thing.

The fact of the matter is, up until the time of this posting, Apple has issued only 4 press releases about the product. Since January.

Count 'em yourself. 4. Add in about 3 "No comments" and Steve Jobs at D5, where he spent less than I'd say 20% of his time actually talking about it and I think its fair to say that *Apple* isn't creating the hype...the web and the press are.

What I take Apple to task is them creating a whole heap of needless angst over the thing. 2 PRs (so far) this week, and we hear about Battery/Screen and youTube.

This was one press release. Come on Apple. What's today's/tomorrow's going to be...announcing that cases will be available at point of sale?

But what really made me just "go off" is um, since when the hell does Apple pre-announce a product and *not* put in on store.apple.com...MONTHS in advance sometimes?

Yeah...exactly :)

buying this phone on its launch day shows one has more money than sense. who wouldn't wait for industry reviewers on a 500$ electronics device? Especially when that is the first attempt of a company in that field. No preordering + no sending of review iphones prior to launch shows apple is manufacturing hype (they're not the first to use that approach though). do not underestimate iMuggers. I wouldn't risk walking around flashing the iphone for some weeks. Those Canadians and Puerto Ricans lamenting the late availability of iphone: US customers will save you the hassle of testing the phone so its (possible) issues are all ironed out before it gets to you.

I'll say what I've said elsewhere: I'm paying gang members to rough up anybody I see lining up before 2 pm on the 29th.

Don't be that guy who ruins it for everybody else by camping unnecessarily. Just don't.

After seeing all the problems with the first generation MacBooks from last summer, there is no way in hell I'm buying an iPhone within the first MONTH of it being out. Be wise, people!

I just passed my local AT&T store. There was a notice posted that the store would begin selling the iphone @ 6pm. Also, the store will be closing earlier @ 4:30 to preparer for the crowds. Interesting, huh? Sorry all you early bloomers, looks like you will have to wait.

I wish I could've gotten the chance to be in line for the phone... but there's some things that don't let me.

1) I have a contract that ends on September 2009. Poor me.
2) I am a Claro customer (I had Verizon Wireless, but since they sold out local shares to América Móvil, I now have Claro).
3) The first generation iPhone will not be touching Puerto Rico's shores.

But, hey, at least I'm not the only one suffering for number three! Nice to see that someone else from Puerto Rico reads TUAW! Not alone in here! zerock, add me to Messenger, if you have one! ramcosca at hotmail dawt com!!!
