The bottom right of the Apple guided tour page confirms that Apple will be selling the iPhone online. Since the option is still grayed out, it's unclear whether the link will take you to the online Apple Store, to an AT&T site, or to some combination of the two. It's also unclear how much stock will be assigned to that store, and what delays it will have compared to camping out in front of an AT&T or Apple store next week. TUAW readers, does this change your plans?

No reason to be a snot. Not everyone takes the time to actually go look at the apple site. This informs all of those people.

Believe it or not, all language from Apple since day 1 in January's keynote has revolved around AT&T/Apple brick and mortar stores. Never in my memory has a word been spoken about selling these devices online, leaving it open to curiosity as to whether people are going to have to wait in line or find a physical store - not always an easy thing for many people who don't live around the block from a mall.

EVERYONE SHOULD NOTE: The ONLY requirement detailed anywhere to date, is that the iPhone requires an iTunes account. I predict that the iPhone will sold and delivered in a very efficient, easy, customer-friendly manner. All indications are pointing to this. 1)You walk into Apple (store or online) or AT&T and buy the phone. Period. 2) You bring it home and Sync it to your iTunes account, at which time you will be prompted that you need to have an iTunes account if you don't already have one. Period. 3) If you have a phone/data service plan, because you've taken the time to sign the contracts and agree to pay for said level of service from the service provider AT&T, to support the Phone/Data functionality, your iTunes account will know it and the phone will work. Period. It has to be this way. If some time down the road, you refuse to pay your monthly phone bill, your phone service will be terminated by AT&T and you will have a beautiful, very fancy, latest and greatest "Multi-Touch" $500(4GB) or $600(8GB) iPod. It's obvious to me and you will all see this is exactly what will happen next Friday night.

YOU GUYS! SHUT UP! I hate little girly remarks. We love the iPhone. We are excited. We want to hear EVERYTHING about it. If you don't, leave this blog. Your comments are unnecessary. You are a bunch of idiots. Go get a life instead of trying to make a point that doesn't make any sense. Shame on you and your stupid brains!

How much for the monthly service charges if you go all the way? I've heard that it's in the $200 range.
IS THAT RIGHT?

The "rudeness" seems to be limited to responsees to a certain blogger who writes an awful lot of...how can I say this without being rude..."material whose relevence may be questionable."

Who did you hear that from? Your pet chinchilla? (oops - rude!) Nobody knows. Yes, data and phone bills for heavy smartphone users routinely run into the hundreds per month. But there have been no official plans released for the iPhone yet.
Oh, and to answer the original question, does the fact that the iPhone will be sold online change my plans? No. Obviously it will be sold online. Anyone could've guessed that. However, I did read recently that ship times from online sales will only be 2-3 days. If that's true, then that may change my plans. (Sorry, no source.)

I think the continued bashing of Erica Sadun does not reflect well on the readers of this site. The fact that people continue to visit the site says that they find it useful or informative; while hard-core Apple addicts may already know some of the information posted here, that is not a reason to denigrate the writer for imparting it to those who may not spend all day surfing for every scrap of information themselves.
If you're the kind of person who is up to date on every rumor or speculation out there, why beat up on people who aren't? This website serves the entire spectrum of Apple fans.
In this particular case, there has been NO official word from either Apple or AT&T on whether iPhone will be available online, no matter how much people assume it. Erica is pointing out that there is finally official confirmation of this rumor.

Some people are just such know-it-alls and they have to make sure everybody knows it. nothing is less relevant than a post to a blog stating it is not relevant. Do us all a favour, go puff your ego somewhere else, your comments serve no purpose. I for one did not know iPhone would be sold online. assumed it would be a retail outlet only affair. Also did not assume the iPhone would work without phone contract, at least initially. Yes maybe it is all so obvious to you braiin giants out there. But i'm glad this has been pointed out as an option. To all you smack talkers who think you are soo smart. Its real easy. Blogger.com, go start your own blog and report your shinng pearls of wisdom. Otherwise, (explicit language removed/saying essentially "please go away")

Thanks for the update Erica. I was curious about online sales and even commented about it it earlier so I really appreciate the quick follow-up. Ignore the sarcasm. Some people treat anonymity like a license to behave
completely differently than they do in real life.
As to your question about how it might affect my plans I guess it would depend on the details and my mood come the 29. I've already mentioned I'd be happy to wait a day or two and ignore the hysteria but I might be feeling adventurous. What I don't want is to guess wrong and wind up on the waiting list, so I guess a safe plan might be to bring my macBook to
the Apple Store as a backup and just play it by ear. What I really
need is more info, so keep doing what you''re doing. Thanks.
