Hollywood eyes the iPhone
iPhone fever, have you caught it yet? It would seem that Hollywood has. The iPhone has set the cellphone market on fire (even though almost no one has used it yet) and Hollywood has taken notice. They are now scrambling to work out deals with a variety of companies to serve content to the iPhone (and other cellphones as well) according to the New York Times. The movie industry has largely ignored the mobile phone market mostly because historically the only phones that would offer a pleasant viewing experience (i.e. sport a large screen) have been limited to phones targeted to the corporate market. Apple has the consumer in mind, and that is an audience that Hollywood knows, and wants to sell things to.
Even if the iPhone fails (which is a pretty big if, but possible) it will have lasting ramifications on the cellphone industry. People will expect more, and there are some companies out there that seem to finally be getting that.

I think the reality is that Jobs & Co. have really planned this(the iPhone) out to the "T" and failure is not an option. We are about to see a disruptive change in the way people connect to the world. 2052 (Minority Report) is upon us much sooner than we thought!
This really is a BIG deal. I really do not think peopel see past the self-generated inner hype to what is actually happening. Interconnectedness just took one more giant step forward!

The way I see it, the iphone will just start a "big screen" trend and maybe attract some more non-business crowd towards multi-featured phones (iphone >>isn't

The way I see it, the iphone will just start a "big screen" trend and maybe attract some more non-business crowd towards multi-featured phones (iphone isn't a smart phone). But that crowd will be divided among the already experienced players that will offer many models every year and guess what, Apple ain't one. Back to computers then and my G5 is happy again.

Number three problem - if you're going to do video, do it properly. Anyone who's looked at the aspect ratio of the iPhone's display must be wondering what the hell these guys were thinking when they decided to use that resolution. TV is 16:9 these days and if you have older videos it's 4:3. iPhone is neither

I just don't understand why people would be more than willing to fork over $600 for an iPhone but whine\complain that the PS3 is $600. If the iPhone came with a 50 GB or larger hard drive I could see why people would want the all-in-one phone + MP3 player but it doesn't even have close to that.

Josh, you raise a good point about the PS3, especially because both are in markets where the device has traditionally been subsidized in return for future revenue streams.
I think the big issue with the PS3 is that it is not blowing people away and becoming that "must have" device, while the iphone is. Yes, a lot of it is probably hype which will subside, but Sony managed to underwhelm with its first software wave, bungled the launch by not having enough on hand and then lost the "coolness" factor to the Wii.

"iPhone fever, have you caught it yet?"
You guys certainly have. Let's "Zapruder" the story count:
June 18 - 5
June 19 - 3
June 20 - 8
June 21 - 9
June 22 - 12
June 23 - 1 (slackers!)
June 24 - 2
June 25 - 2 (as of 10:07am eastern)
Not complaining, just sayin'...
The only thing I want to know know are the rates and read user reviews after June 29. By the way, I'll be in Cupertino on the 29th. Hopefully I'll get to see one at The Company Store or at the Valley Fair mall Apple Store.
