Apple posts iPhone activation video
We know what you're thinking, "This isn't 'The Unofficial iPhone Weblog,' man! Enough already!" If it's any consolation, you'll only have to deal with our iPhone fascination for a few more days. After that....well, after that it will be a full-blow obsession. We can't help it.Apple has released an iPhone setup and activation video that guides new users through the process of setting up their iPhones. The whole process is handled by iTunes, of course. In fact, you can activate your phone from home, and not while standing in the crowded and noisy mall. Very nice.
The video also explains how to sync your data via iTunes (it works just like an iPod, of course) and features the same well groomed, well lit and hypnotic man - dressed just like Steve, mind you - from the previous video.

I just watched the newly posted Activation video for iPhone on Apple.com. Did anyone else notice that in the sequence showing sync your data ( addresses, music, etc) the capacity size is the same as a 80 gig iPod... am I seeing things????

FWIW I love the iPhone coverage. This is The Unofficial APPLE Weblog and this is a huge Apple release! Keep up the great work! Of course, I won't be able to read TUAW after Thursday afternoon, since I will be sitting on the sidewalk on 5th Ave waiting to buy an iPhone...

Man, that actually looks pretty complicated, over here in Belgium, you just move SIM cards from one cellphone to another

I'm sure you are getting a lot of grief from the vocal minority who are bored with iPhone coverage. But like the earlier commentator, I encourage you to keep it coming. It's by far the most relevant Apple news story.

Jonathan,
You move SIM cards to change phones (if they're not locked), but to change your number to a new carrier is a real pain, certainly here in the UK.

Man, this 80Gb-thingie is embarrassing, since the stakes are _that_ high ... someone will get "steve'd", for sure.
The guy, though, is cool. The way he says, "Thank you".
Will he star in "Die Hard 5.0"?!

Well we all know now what an iPhone account will cost. Unlimited web and data and 200 text messages per month thrown in. The base account with 450 minutes a month is $59.95.
Not too shabby.

Hypno-man strikes me as a kind of cross between Rob Lowe and George Takei (Star Trek's Mr Sulu). With a dash of Steve Jobs, naturally.

Hi Jonathan-
I completely agree - Europe has it made with unlocked GSM.
However, compared to the activations in the U.S., this iTunes activation is unbelievably easy. You normally have to sit around for an hour or two while your phone is "activated" by a store rep. And that's with GSM!
Many of our phones are TDMA/CDMA and have no SIM card - they actually get tied to your account and your name. The only way to switch is to call the carrier. At least with US GSM (T-Mo/AT&T) you can swap out your current SIM card into a new phone if you lose your current phone / want to upgrade. That's progress for us :)

I think Hypno-man is entirely digital, just look at the eyes. This is what has kept most of Pixar busy for the last year, probably.

Does anyone else notice that this guy has a hidden slur when he talks?

Did they update the video? I only saw 7.24GB or whatever it was. Not 70 anymore.

what about ringtones...how can you have an ipod phone and not be able to download any ringtones? doesnt make sense and seems like a huge oversight. anyone agree?
it doesnt even have to be via itunes, but what about direct to phone downloads like you can do with any other cingular/att device?
just seems odd to me...unless they just arent telling us yet...

I'm somewhat dissapointed that it syncs bookmarks with Safari and IE, but not Firefox. Makes Mozilla COO John Lilly's concerns sound a little more valid.
