iPhone line forming in NYC
What would you do if you really wanted an iPhone, lived in a major city and had lots of free time (like, say, four whole days)? You'd line up outside the Apple Store, of course!New Yorkers started an iPhone queue last night - a full four days before the thing goes on sale. Now that's an example of desire. I want one, too, but I wouldn't sleep on the street for four days. Probably.
Update: Now, if Greg Packer - the guy who is officially 1st in this line - had sold advertising on himself, he'd have a free iPhone by Friday night. Silly Greg.
Thanks, Dan!

"plans are subject to AT&T credit approval."
So what happens if you get your shiny new $658 iPhone home to activate it and find out you're declined? Do you get to bring it back for a full refund? That would be a first for Apple who never accepts returns.

They will probably accept returns. AT&T sells tons of refurb phones as it is.
And Apple does accept returns, in my experience.

In the Apple Activation and Syncing video it asks for your Social Security Number or your 'approval number' if you got the credit check done in store.
Maybe at check out they will ask you if you would like to have your credit check run right there?
If you fail do you have to pay the 10% restocking fee? (If you ran the credit check at home)

Don't worry. Apple will be sending him his check on time.

I guess I answer my own question... it appears from the activation video that you need to enter your Soc. Sec. # when you get home from the AT&T or Apple store. So that means they must do a credit check and application for the service contact at point of sale.
That'll be interesting to see how many people they turn away when they tell them there will be an $800 - $1,300 deposit, on top of the purchase price of the phone, to buy this, bring the total out-the-door cost to those with credit problems; $1,100+

Could these people be plants from some ad agency seeking to create hype?

Given that there are usually no lines to get in to the store, how would people know where the line started? Did these people work out something with the store to designate that point as the "start of the line"? I can bring a folding chair, sit at some random location around the store and tell everyone _I'm_ the first one in line!

Some people have nothing else better to do, and or no patience, what would be great is if the first 200,000 iphones are dud's or they explode in your hand while making the wrong finger touching....lol I am glad that I can wait till the 2nd iteration of the iphone

there are places around the earth where people fight for their rights, struggle for just causes or simply toil to get through everyday hardships. these two goons' life accomplishment is being the first to buy a massively produced consumer electronics device from that particular store. sad really.
