Apple answers your questions about the iPhone

There is no denying that the hype surrounding the iPhone is... well, a bit much. We here at TUAW are as guilty as anyone for contributing to it, but I would point out that it is our job to obessess over Apple (and we do it so well!). All the blame for the hype shouldn't be placed squarely on the tech media though, it is clear Apple is egging us on by slowly releasing information about the iPhone as we get closer and closer to launch (in contrast, Microsoft would have had all this information about the iPhone available the first day it was announced... and no one would have cared).

The newest news from Apple is this iPhones Questions and Answers section on Apple.com. It answers some typical questions about the iPhone like what OSs the iPhone will work with (Windows 2000, XP, Vista, and OS X), can I used my existing iPod accessories (maybe), and what kind of headphones can I use with it (most standard headphones should work). However, the most exciting thing for the iPhone crazed is the above picture. That's the first clear picture of the iPhone accessories that Apple will be making. We can see the Dock (which included a space for recharging the Apple bluetooth headset), the Apple Bluetooth headset, and the iPhone charger (which looks just like the iPod charger. Sweet!).

Thanks to everyone for sending this in.

Update: Engadget has confirmed that the dock seen in the picture is included with the $120 Apple Bluetooth headset.

Did anyone else notice that there looks to be little holes in the dock that line up perfectly with the speaker and microphone holes on the bottom of the iPhone? Could the dock maybe provide some kind of speaker phone capability beyond what is built into the iPhone itself? Or maybe they are just there to keep dirt and grit from getting impacted into the holes on the iPhone when you dock it?

I don't mean to double-comment, but iTunes does work on Windows 2000... it always has.

What are the chances that Apple will also include a Universal Dock insert for using iPhone in the hundreds of iPod speakers that use the adapters?

@14 harsh:
The specified operating temperature is something that helps you to understand how to take care of your phone. For example, this spec should help you to understand that you should not make calls while laying down in a snowbank. And perhaps you shouldn't let it sit out on the curb overnight in the dead of winter. It's their subtle, diplomatic way of saying "don't do something dumb."

@15 ralph:
no, it's about the same size as the charger that the retail stores have been carrying since the switch to USB. They're pretty small.

@16 Quix:
It's the difference between $580 (4gb) and $690 (8gb) when you factor in tax and activation fee. Let's say, for the sake of argument, that this stellar headset is $100 (on par with a nice tiny Motorola BT headset, but I think I'm shooting low, since it supposedly includes a dock). That means almost $110 with tax, which brings my total up to $690 just for a 4gb iPhone and headset. And $800 if I wanted the 8gb, which I do...but I can't justify $800 even to myself, let alone to management.

"Dammit, now I'm gonna have to get the $499 phone...I don't want the mrs. to kick me out."

Come on Jim, it's $100. For double the storage capacity. You're going to want every single byte you can get on this thing.

Spend the extra dough. Beg for forgiveness from the little lady later.

I note that they do not give clear answers to the two questions that are tantamount to "What will happen if I install my T-Mobile SIM in an iPhone".

Does anyone know what ATT's unlocking policy is for _other_ phones?

Anyone notice that it says that iphone works with Windows 2000SP4????

"Will iPhone work with my PC and Microsoft Windows?

Yes. iPhone works with Windows 2000 (SP4), Windows XP Home or Professional (SP2), and Windows Vista. See specifications for more details."

The specifications does not mention win2k. Very odd, especially since Win2k can't run iTunes (iirc).

Has anyone noticed that the operating temperature is only from 32-95 degrees? I live in NY, where it's regularly below 32 in the winter, and sometimes over 95 in the summer. The high is 92 for today! Is the operating temperature in line with most phones?
