Check iPhone availability at your local Apple Store

Here's a little detail I missed the first time I read today's missive from Apple: you can now check the availability of iPhones at the Apple store nearest you. Simply go to this website, select your state, and you'll get a list of the Apple Stores in that states with a circle next to them. Green means they have iPhones, and red means they are plum out. There is no word on how real time this availability checker is, but it has the potential of saving you some time.
Update: It was pointed out in the comments that this availability status is updated nightly. Therefore you can check to see if your Apple Store has iPhones the day before you go, but they might sell out before you get there (and the page will still say they are available until the next day).

the individual store websites that link to this page, say that it will be updated every night for the following day.

Arrrrggghhh!!! Why do people keep using small dots of red and green, leaving those of us who are color blind to wail in frustration?
I have NO idea what color these dots are.
Lesson to web designers: try using a red X and a green CHECK. That way it works for everyone.

I hate it when people use red and green to distinguish something. Those of us who are colorblind are left to wonder if our local stores have them or not (or we have to view the src of the page). Bad UI design, Apple!

heh, it seems I'm not the only person who is colorblind and is annoyed =)
wouldn't it have been simpler to just make a check vs. x mark or something? sheesh.

I may not be colorblind, but I do live in Wisconsin, which seems to have been excluded. Hello. We have an Apple store in Milwaukee with a second one scheduled to open tomorrow.

You guys are losers, obviously Apple does not care about handicapped people. The iPhone has no buttons. Would a blind man be able to use the phone? Possibly but not efficiently. They have a dot on the number 5 on every other single phone in the planet. Kudos to Apple. "Think Differently" indeed.

Agreed, the less red dots there are, the less us color-challenged folk will have to worry. In other words: they are all green, guys!

I have 2 domains apprasied by swift appraisal at around $90k for the two!!
www.IphoneStockist.com
www.iphoneStockist.co.uk
I can see anyone who cant get hold of an Iphone right away searching the net and these two are ranked #1, so the potential for affiliate marketing revenue is great, Im no web builder so would rather somone 'that can' have these and realise their potential..

Hey Dave! And hey NBC, can we get some shows for the blind? And hey, you know what really pisses me off? Where are my radio stations for the deaf? You idiot, it's a phone that focuses on VIDEO FUNCTIONALITY. I'm color blind, and the scheme noted above is annoying, but let's keep it in the realm of reality ok? People like you are why they put braille on the drive thru ATM. BLIND PEOPLE DON"T DRIVE! It's not like there aren't any phones that will work for the blind, why should Apple be forced to make one?

They put braille on a drive-through ATM because blind people are perfectly capable of riding in cars. And perhaps they don't want to tell the driver their PIN.
Accessibility is important. You can't just assume when someone will need accessible devices or content because you can't imagine when or where they might want to use it. If you don't need the accessibility, you're not the target market. How would you know?
Apple doesn't have to provide anything to anyone or cater to any market. But criticism of a device because it's not accessible is perfectly valid and useful.
Now, how will Apple make a glass screen tactile-accessible? If anyone can do it, Apple can.
To the color-blind folks, I would suggest an email to Apple, or a phone call. Or better yet, a paper letter.

Ummmm.....why would a blind person even *want* an iPhone? Pay a premium for a device whose main attraction is something you can't take advantage of? It just sounds inherently silly. It would be like a blind person complaining about not being able to buy halogen track lighting.

#15: They sure do: Macs, iPods, Apple TVs and now iPhones.
All of these devices are computers. Further, all of Apple's non-Mac devices actually *need* a computer for half their functionality (loading music from iTunes, synching contacts from Address Book, etc.).
The Mac is fine; the introduction of a non-Mac device is only bringing more attention to them.

i just sent a tip over to engadget .. but .. after one of the ATT stores that i called said they would NOT carry the phone tomorrow even though the iPhone locator says they will (3 times in fact) i decided to do some calling around .. and the results are scary.
any one who wanted to take that back door route to an ATT store better make sure they hit their official corporate store and not a franchise booth or location as (of right now) the 6 stores i have called from ATTs list in the chicagoland area all tell me that they will not be carrying the iPhone but the corporate store will.
point of all of this is that they appear on the list when they shouldnt.

Dan,
Because it's super convenient to reach over the driver to get to the keypad. The point of my comment was that there are some things that people who are disabled in certain ways just cannot take advantage of. I think it's great that there are things out there that adapt for the use of the handicapped, but in this touchy, feely, butterflies, and sunshine world there's just some stuff that some people won't be able to do.
