Pogue answers some iPhone questions

David Pogue, tech columnist for the New York Times, is one of the select few who were granted pre-release iPhone review units. This hot little item has tongues wagging, and people itching to plunk down cold hard cash to get one. Oddly enough, despite all the hype Apple has been a little coy with all the details about the iPhone. David is shedding some light on the subject by answering some common questions about the iPhone. Yes, it has a vibrate mode (though Pogue says it is 'weak'),
I won't steal David's thunder, so read his post for all the gory details.

wow, nice to see the keyboard in horizontal mode, even if it is only on the browser. (on second thought, where else would you need it besides that?)

Any guesses how long it takes until someone hacks the "disk mode" working?

David Pogue put together a great Q&A list, but it's disheartening to read that no ToDos sync to the iPhone. Bummer! I had assumed that ToDos would sync along with their associated iCal calendars, but not so. And I was so hoping to chuck my Palm Tungsten T5 and switch completely over to the iPhone.
Here's hoping ToDos come in one of the promised iPhone software updates.

As a hard core Mac fan (25 years) and someone who won’t leave Verizon for anything (been with them since three corporate identities ago), passing on the iPhone has been a tough call. Having read Pogue’s Q&A, though...I’m feeling a little less blue - much of what I yearned for won’t be part of the first generation. Whew. As weird as it sounds, I actually feel better now.

I can't believe you can't use your own custom ring tones... that's seriously shortsighted seeing as it would sell more music. I'm guessing that'll be in one of the software updates.
I bet iTunes starts selling ringtones next.

@ 6:
Think about it...AT&T pretty much gave Apple almost everything they wanted. There HAD to be some negotiations about things AT&T wanted. And I'm sure...SURE...that things like ringtones, games, etc are likely to pop up as pay-to-play items. My only hope is that they'll allow GarageBand projects to be synced as ringtones. But that'd be a pretty big loophole.
Cellphone carriers are money-grubbing. There's no way in hell they'll allow you to do something for free, when they can charge you for it.
Motorola made an awesome phone with the RAZR V3m. But I came to a rude awakening when I learned about Verizon's software, and how it turns off more than half the cool features of the phone, just so they can charge you for what would have been free.
But I have this feeling that Apple (as a whole) doesn't like evil corporations' tactics...and they're pretty much BETTING that the open-source community will find OS X loopholes to get that iPhone cracked. Think about Apple's language: "You should use the SIM card that came with iPhone." Seriously, if Apple didn't want you, the consumer, to win, they'd have said "you can't," like AT&T has said. Somebody hit the nail on the head in one of the recent posts. It's like the burn-and-rip method of getting out of DRM. Even Steve Jobs doesn't want you to get hosed by money-grubbing companies. I mean, Apple wants to make money...but I doubt they'd ever compromise their own software or hardware in such a way that CAN'T be gotten around. Either they haven't finished the software yet, or they intend to leave you a back door. Nothing is by mistake.

If you want to recieve PUSH mail like on a blackberry. Just set your normal email provider to forward the mail to a free yahoo account that you can set up. Then set the yahoo account to always send messages with a Reply to: YOUR ORIGINAL EMAIL ADDRESS.therefore no one will get confused why you recieve at one address and send from another.

no Disk Mode? Well that pretty much killed it for me, plus not supporting other video than H.264 and mpeg4, nor 3rd party software like an iphone version of VLC Player. Plus the usual suspects - EDGE, AT&T, price. :(

Seriously amazing that the iPhone doesn't sync To-Dos, especially when it's part of iCal on the Mac... So weird, and quite disappointing... All the GTD people are in for a little disappointment if they were considering an iPhone....
