Add New Ring Tone image file in iTunes 7.3
A nosy -- but helpfully so -- reader scrounged around the iTunes package files and discovered an image in the Help directory (/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/iTunes Help/gfx/) called "ringtone.gif." The image is a plus sign next to a bell -- add a ringtone, anybody? This helps confirm disputed reports that you can actually add custom ring tones to your iPhone. For the record, this doesn't mean the feature actually exists (yet) in iTunes -- just that it's likely, if not now, then in a future update. Guess we won't know 'til 6ish tonight.
Thanks Judson!

I would be willing to bet that not only will you be able to add mp3s as ringtones to the iPhone but the iTunes music store will start selling them.
Why not? It's just good business.
Of course I'd be kind of pissed if I can't add my own custom made mp3 ringtones that I made from my own mp3 (ripped from CD's I own).

other than being plastered with cingular logos, i dont BELIEVE i do... granted i didnt put too much time or effort into it. i loaded the mp3 over, went to it and selected it in the menu to get options for it, it allowed me to play it, set it as an alarm, delete, etc etc, but when i go to set my ringtone, it doesnt let me use it.
Tim, do you have a crippled / branded W810 ? My brother has the same phone, and he can use mp3's as ringtones.. Even My SonyEricsson K700 from 2004 can use mp3 ringtones..

i see what it says, but that doesnt change my mind on what i think it would be. not everything in the world of apple is what it seems to be
i suppose we will know around 6:05 tonight?
@tim -- The name of the image is "ringtone.gif"

this isnt actually a ringtone button, but an alarm button. for example, i have 1 mp3 on my phone (just to see how it worked), i canNOT set it as my ringtone, however, i can set it as an alarm.
so that is my assumption
i should note, that I immediately downloaded itunes looking for the iphone image that you get when you plug it in and I ran into this. OS X says I opened the image about 15 minutes before the digg story was submitted. I have a screenshot if you need more proof than my word :P.
