Line Report: AT&T store, Union Square NYC
On my way to work I swung by the AT&T Store on the northern edge of NYC's Union Square. At 9:15 am, the line was approximately 20 people long, including an impressive air mattress/tent combination at the front of the queue.I chatted briefly with the line-leading gentlemen (and one young lady who chose not to be photographed); most of them arrived at about 10 pm Thursday night, with some coming later at about 1 am; the next folks in line started arriving at about 6:15 am. All were excited to be getting their hands on the iPhone, and since the oppressive heat that's smothered New York for the past few days appears to have broken, they should have a relatively easy wait.
The line leaders, from left to right: filmmaker brothers Casey and Van Neistat (creators of the iPod's Dirty Secret video); Daniel Feldman (standing in red jacket; he described himself as "the world's biggest TUAW fan" -- thanks Daniel!); and "destination network" Plum TV's spokesperson Graham Veysey (no longer rockin' the 'stache, as you can see). They asked me why I wasn't in line myself, and the sad truth is: I can't afford an iPhone right now.
It's nice that the Neistats don't bear a residual iPod grudge after the bad battery experience, dontcha think?
I'll try to sidle over to the other nearby AT&T Store on 6th Avenue for a report later today.

I just called the Millenia store in Orlando and they said the line was somewhere under 100 people as of ~11am. I was planning to go there tonight (or to the Florida Mall) to check it out (not buying one, just curious about the crowd) but alas, my presence is required elsewhere at exactly 6pm tonight. Oh well.

"creators of the iPod's Dirty Secret video, which may have influenced the $99 battery replacement policy for iPods"
Please stop spreading FUD. The policy was announced before the video aired.

40-ish people in line at the Perimeter Mall Apple Store in Atlanta, GA. The Apple folk are giving out Smart water.

I'm in downtown DC and, last I checked, the AT&T store across the street from where I work (on 12th & D, NW) had a big iPhone banner and no line out front. (I'm not there because, first, I can't afford and iPhone and second, I gotta work.)
@Jay Tei - nobody's holding a gun to your head. TUAW even created a special feed for people who wanted to avoid iPhone news. It seems like maybe you like complaining more than you dislike hearing iPhone news?

Was in downtown Columbia, MD for lunch. Apple store at the mall has a line about 20 deep, AT&T kiosk in the mall was empty. The AT&T store down Little Pax had no line at all.

FYI - line at Willow Bend Mall, Plano (Suburb of Dallas) is about 50 people as of noon. The line is formed through the mall walkway, in between two guard ropes (what the heck do they call those fuzzy bank line ropes?).
I went just to get an idea what the wait is like (no way I'm waiting in line for more than an hour), saw the line and promptly gave up hope. But I did dash in to see if the store had a laptop bag I wanted (no).
About ten feet inside the entrance of the store, there is a line of black-shirts that almost looks like a riot squad formation. I had to twist my body to edge through to the back of the store. I thought they were gonna stop me.
