The store has officially closed for the time being (until 6PM, of course) and they have put up black material covering the windows. Its all very theatrical and adds to the element of excitement. The line is now up to more like two hundred but I've also heard reports from other Los Angeles area stores like the Glendale Galleria, that the lines are stretching all the way outside and winding through the parking structure.I feel bad for those people and a little better abbot my 95th place i line -- at least according to the last count conducted by mall security. At the moment, people are well-behaved. I just hope that continues when the covers come off the windows and the selling frenzy begins. On a very positive note, some Apple Store employees have just come by with boxes filled with bottled water are are giving it away for free to the people in line. A very nice gesture indeed and appreciated. Although, I would appreciate it more if they told me they had enough iPhones to sell to all the people in front of me and that I could still get one. Oh well, at least I got some water out of it.

I stopped by the Pasadena Apple Store and talked with the two kids in the front of the line, Don and Jerry. Don is #1 and is buying an iPhone. Jerry came along for the ride, and is going to be selling his #2 spot for $340, he told me. That's for two people each buying a phone. I don't know which I admire more, Don's iPhone enthusiasm or Jerry's business acumen.
I'm going to swing by just before 6 and say hi.

Well, we got our iPhone. #91 in the line at the Tampa Apple Store. It's pretty. It fits nice in the hand. Love to be able to use it.
But.
Enter AT&T, stage left. (boo hisssss)
We have a family plan with AT&T (the old AT&T, not the cingular-come-lately) and one person in the house is Linux and one is Mac. The Linux person just got a corporate Blackberry (ick) on T-Mobile (ick) and the Mac-dude got his iPhone (woohoo). The family account is under the Linux person's name. (Apple doesn't support iTunes for Linux and broke the ability of wine/codeweaver to emulate it. So Linux person gets no iPhone unless Linux person swtiches back to Windows (choke)).
Guess what, you have a choice, add your phone to the existing plan plus $20 and keep your number, or create a whole new account and LOSE your number. That's it. (AT&T was trying so hard to get us to leave our ancient plan behind for a new one. We've resisted so that we could get a (cough) discount on our new phone with the 2-year contract.) They want to charge us $100/mo for 200 minutes and the MediaMax plan. Or we have to give up our number and act like we're new customers.
ARGH.
We're currently in phone-tree-waiting-line-hell. Have been there for over 20 minutes. I'm contemplating death and dismemberment. The question is, do I rail at AT&T for having horrid customer service, or Apple for going with one of the worst vendors in the country?

Why don't they give out numbered tickets?

I have had mine for an hour and a half, now (short line in Muncie, IN). Still waiting for AT&T to let me use it.
An early caveat: The iPhone requires activation even for iPod features. While you wait for an email from AT&T, you cannot do anything but look at the pretty earth picture.
Oh, I can dial 911.
Woo hoo! I knew waiting in that line would pay off!

If you're near Sherman Oaks and can get to Encino, the AT&T store is complete void of any line. SERIOUSLY.

I did stop by again at about 5:30 and chatted with Don and Jerry for a moment, but they were pretty much inundated with media interviewing them about the iPhone. My dog (Iggy Pup) and I did get our pictures snapped by some of the photogs. You'd think they'd never seen a dog riding on a motorcycle before. =)
