Well. I'm in line. (Oakbrook Mall)
Alright. I'm here. I'm set. 5 a.m. No wasting time, man, no wasting time.I'm sitting in front of the Apple Store Oakbrook here in Oak Brook, IL., along with sixteen other crazies. The first in line, a nice lady by the name of Jamene Reynolds, got here at 3-freakin-a.m. The rest trickled in a little after that. It's no Michigan Avenue line, but it continues to grow with each passing minute. One kid's getting paid $15/hour, saving a space. Another says if he doesn't get an iPhone, "he'll have to go streaking" (but he may have been joking...?). iPhone Hysteria seems ripe.
We managed to organize ourselves into a stable line -- the Apple Store employees are no help as of yet; they stand at the door, mocking us with their insider-ness -- and things seem orderly. And we're all excited.
Stay tuned with TUAW and our beloved bros at Engadget for the bestest iPhone coverage on the 'net. Only thirteen hours to go. Let iDay (lame) begin!
[Update:] If anyone's at -- or will be at -- the Oakbrook store, I'm about the eighth person in line, wearing a black hoodie, probably sitting on the floor, and most likely fiddling on my MacBook Pro. Feel free to say hi! I forgot how boring these lines actually are.

as opposed to the PS3 that stays at home, one can get mugged every time they're flashing the iphone in public...
I'd wait till monday or tuesday even. Hell, I'd wait for iPhone 2.0, or a phone that can run on a decent carrier...

Could you'll please use a different image for the iPhone? I'm sick of seeing those same hands for the past six months...

I just renwewed with Verizon. Aside from crippling their phones' Bluetooth functionality, the service is quite reliable in the DC area. And for now, they're still the only service that gets access in the Metro tunnels.
While I like the looks of the iPhone, I am hesistant to jump ship just yet. I certainly wouldn't camp out for one - $500-$600 and you're STILL locked into a contract.
I will be interested, however, in seeing if the iPhone will function as an iPod in cars that have iPod connectivity, such as Honda, Audi, BMW, VW, etc. If it works there, then I can truly get down to carrying one device.

Well, good luck! I can imagine how exciting this must be. However, for us Europeans, it's going to be a loooong wait.

We're in line for the iPhone at the Burlington Mall in Burlington, MA. There are 10 people in line... one guy has been outside the mall overnight in his car. The mall doors opened at 6:00 AM - then they let the first 5 people in. I got here at 6:10 AM and I was 6th in line...

There were about 60 people in line at the 5th Ave. store around 9:15 last night. They've got a camera set up there again in the same place they had one when the store opened, so I think it's safe to say they're expecting a pretty big crowd.

i love living in chicago .. you know why ... 5 stores + several corporate ATT stores = no waiting in retarded lines for more than 4 hours.

I am first in line at the Buffalo Walden Apple Store, about 15 in line as of 8:58 AM. Apple employees have been great, provided us with water bottles, and even ran a power strip from the store for those of us that brought laptop. Also, Apple employees have been carting in food and other party supplies all morning.
