iPhone battery warranty, replacement information
Apple released information on the iPhone battery's warranty today, as well as the cost of a replacement. Out of the box, your iPhone's battery is covered for 1 year. Apple intends to release Apple Care for iPhone sometime this summer (allegedly). Customers of Apple Care for iPhone will be entitled to a new battery IF the one they're using drops to below 50% of capacity before their Apple Care runs out.
Otherwise, a new one will cost you $79US. One other note: Apple states that they get rid of dead batteries in "...an environmentally-friendly manner." So don't get all excited, Greenpeace.

I'm sorry, but 3 days without your cell phone? Utterly ridiculous. Apple will have to change this policy to an in-store service or they are going to have some very pissed off iPhone customers.

Eh, that's why I keep my previous phone as a backup...

The rumor on the forums is, for a small fee, they'll give you a loaner iPhone while they're fixing yours. SIM card swap, and you're golden.
But if I were you, I'd go ahead and follow all of their recommendations for protecting the life of your battery. Or, I guess you could treat it like crap, and ensure you get the battery replaced before your applecare is up...but that'd be a gamble.

Greenpeace is all about getting excited, not about the environment. Media whores, little else.

The battery is soldered in, so no user replacement (unless you can solder, of course). This makes it doubtful that there will in-store replacement of the battery. Also, access to the battery looks to be a bit (a lot) more complicated than on the iPod.
It's been five whole days since the iPhone went on sale, and there is still no "dirty secret" FUD-site. I'm shocked!

I would like to know what Apple means with "...an environmentally-friendly manner." And I would like to know how Green is the iPhone itself. I mean, what there is inside? I can't find anything in the apple specs about PVC, BFRs or other chemicals. Nothing about energy efficiency or take back policy. It looks Greenpeace is investigating:
