TUAW Tip: Tapping on the capacity bar in iTunes

Many iTunes users are unaware that the capacity presentation for iPods and iPhones actually is interactive. Tap on the bar to switch from between views. These views include the default view (space occupied), an item-count view (number of items for each category) and a duration view (the length of playback for the items loaded onto the device). It's just one more sweet little Apple feature.

I'm fairly certain "Other" contains the calendars, contacts, notes, iPod software, and anything you've put on the drive in disk mode.

I think the "other" is where album artwork and things like that are stored. "Other" is taking up a gig on my iPod.

You can also click on the time on the bottom of iTunes to switch between time in days and time in hours.

I didn't know that! So often, I find something with Apple that makes me go "OHH NICE!"

Thanks, Erica!

No, I didn not know this. Another helpful hint, thanks! I wish it would tell me what was categorized as "Other." I assume that's where podcasts go. But, sometimes I have no podcasts loaded and yet "Other" is still taking up space.

This reminds me of how you can click the version number in About This Mac and get the build and serial number of your machine. It has that same kind of 'oh' subtlety and adds to the neat little tricks factor of Apple's software.

You can drag songs from your Library to the iPod. Just set it up to "manage music manually." I do it all the time for my 80gb.
