AppleCare for iPhone details confirmed

Rumors were floating around earlier this week about AppleCare for iPhone. Now, reader Kender points out the official information from Apple:
  • AppleCare for iPhone will be available "...in July"
  • Your hardware coverage will be extended for up to 2 years
  • Customers will be provided with a loaner iPhone if theirs is out for repairs (after a $29US "rental fee")
They also list the specifics of the rental unit (you can transfer your data to it and an 8GB phone will get you an 8GB loaner) and exactly what type of things will void your warranty. The only thing missing is the cost of the program, though $60US has been suggested.

Thanks, Kender!

Ok...2 years from now, the iphone should be in the $100 price range, following along the lines of the RAZR, and possibly free with some contracts. Now with this insurance thing, you're going to be paying $60 for the insurance, and $29 for the rental...you might as well get a new iphone.

It really depends on the details for this AppleCare before I decide whether or not its worth it.

I have dropped my current cell phone dozens of times over the last 18 months and it always keeps working. I pay $5 monthly for insurance, if I smash it, drown it, drop it, drive over it, burn it or lose it I pay $50 and get a new (refurb) unit. My Dell laptop has Dell Complete Care that affords me pretty much the same coverage. Why can't I purchase the same coverage from Apple. People are going to start dropping these things and Apple is just going to shrug and say "too bad, we don't cover that".

Yeah, I should'a kept reading. Doesn't look good for headset coverage:

"Your iPhone, its rechargeable battery, and all included accessories are also covered against defects for a full year from the purchase date by a limited hardware warranty."

Included Accessories. Dammit.

I've been pretty impressed so far with Apple's handling of the iPhone, but the "rental fee" for a loaner phone does leave a bad taste in my mouth. It would not only be a huge PR move to offer free loaner phones, but would also make customers feel better about having to send the phone in for battery replacement in the first place.

That freakin' FAQ is inundated with typos and weird language. And it KINDA looks like the bluetooth headset is covered under the iPhone APP as I suspected, but it doesn't go into much detail. Just says "iPhone accessories" are covered, and you may have to pay for a replacement if your phone's out of warranty. Well, duh!

As Ryan points out, it's on Apple's site. It might be noted that it has been there since July 29.

"AppleCare Protection Plan
For $69, the AppleCare Protection Plan for iPhone provides an additional year of hardware repair coverage, including coverage for the iPhone battery.
The AppleCare Protection Plan for iPhone will be available in July. Customers can purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan anytime during the iPhone one-year limited warranty."

Ok, I love my iPhone..but, since Apple forced us to get a 2 year phone contract for it (hacks not withstanding), don't you think they should, you know, STAND BEHIND IT for the full 2 years they expect it to keep going for?
