WWNC 2007 Roundup

The 2007 World Wide Newton Conference took place in Tokyo last month. If you were unable to attend, you can browse the weekend's highlights here.

The big news was the announcement that the Einstein Project - which brings the Newton OS to current hardware - has gone open source. It's now known as Open Einstein, and can be found here.

This is great news, as more collaborators means the more handhelds that can "go green" (and I'm not talking about environmentalism).

Also, Hiroshi Noguchi has released the source code to his Newton WaveLAN drivers. WiFi Newtons for all!

There's more of course, and you can get the full run-down at the link above. Here's to WWNC '08. Might I suggest the east coast of the US?

Thanks, Grant!

WOW.
I'm lookin' forward to finally being able to use my Newt on my wireless - the lack of ability to use WEP was kind of a problem...

Curiously enough, Einstein itself isn't that big (to me, anyway - kick-ass undertaking all the way, but not a project to my needs), but home wifi for the emate is a BIG deal for me.

WikiWikiNewt has the answers you seek. The link below is for the networking page, including browsers, email, and getting networking up and running (ie, WiFi).

I've downloaded the source, which contains a pre-compiled version of the wireless driver package, but I haven't had time to install it to see if it is fully unlocked or if it's the crippled shareware version. I've been using the crippled version for some time now. I was actually waiting for the new year (2006) to buy the driver package, but the developer pulled registration right at the end of 2005.

Don't expect much, though. It is 10 years old. Courier is probably your best bet for a browser, and it's text only.

Hmmm... I have a newton. I have a wavelan card. I don't have the money for an iphone. Can someone point me to a website that will easily guide me with connecting the newton to OS X and getting all this to work? Did someone make a web browser for it?
