Even revolutionary products need Sundays off

Reader Jonathan gave us a heads-up that when he went to activate his iPhone yesterday evening, he ran into an AT&T/iTunes maintenance window. Apparently there's some cleanup to be done after two busy weeks changing the world. Anyone else tried to activate during the service blackout? Let us know.

Damnit! It's Friday, August 3, 2007.....long after the initial hype.
I caved in and bought an iphone today.
Connected it to my powerbook, checked existing AT&T Customer..........
.....................................
..............
I now get the message
"iPhone activations are not available at this time. To activate your iPhone, please try again later. You may now disconnect your iPhone."
WHAT THE HELL?!?!?!?
anything upgraded ? i dont feel any improvement at all :)

The did a full restore of my phone, to see if it was a software problem. I had to wait about 5 hours before my new phone (it was a hardware problem) could be activated and I could use the phone again. I miss Cingular. :(

Didn't work until about 30 mins ago.
I'm not bothered by them needing to upgrade the system. What I am bothered by is the fact that they can't just post an updated maintenance screen that indicates another targeted time to try again (i.e. 7PM or tomorrow morning) rather than asking me for my info, and processing it only for me to be told that I can't activate at that time. That's all I'm asking for.

My issue is that Apple is in bed with AT&T because they were the highest bidder not because they would offer the best quality. Considering AT&T is making tons of money, apple is making $300 profit on each phone, and this whole high dollar operation has been known to be coming... and they're blowing it.
I accept the price of buying the latest brand new technology is going to be hiccups and issues in the first month. My fear and issue is that from my dealings with both AT&T and Apple I'm beginning to think it wont be getting better anytime soon.
Please oh please prove me wrong.
The confusion in understanding what EST means is common. In fact, the FOX TV show "Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?" demonstrates how many people in the US think they can get through life without knowing little tidbits like the difference between EST and EDT! In general, I find that computer systems administrators in the majority don't know the difference! The solution would be to delete the second letter and just make it ET (or CT, MT, PT, etc) and then the date would dictate whether daylight or standard.

July 15 2007 at 5:36 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAll of AT&T's/Cingular's intranet seems to be down. I went to a brick and mortar location to activate a new phone on a goPhone plan and they were unable to help us. Unfortunately, I waited over 15 minutes after signing in on a list to find out that they would not be able to do any account activations or maintenance. Thanks for the heads-ups when I walked in the door!
