Even revolutionary products need Sundays off

Reader Jonathan gave us a heads-up that when he went to activate his iPhone yesterday evening, he ran into an AT&T/iTunes maintenance window. Apparently there's some cleanup to be done after two busy weeks changing the world. Anyone else tried to activate during the service blackout? Let us know.

I missed the launch (I was in tokyo, where cell phones have been cool for years) so I couldn't get my iPhone till yesterday. When I finally got home I could not activate the thing. If there is one company that can destroy my beloved apple it is At&T. No wonder their logo is the Death Star.

It'll be great for AT&T to take off those pre-paid annoying messages on this maintenance update or so !!!

It's not just activations. I somehow managed to lock my SIM, and now can't make any calls. Instead it keeps asking me for a PUK code, and can' give it to me because their systems are down.

If only someone in customer "service" at AT&T or Apple had thought to tell people about *SCHEDULED* maintenance *BEFORE* it happened...!
There are a lot of people with activated iPhones who for one reason or another were restoring them and then found that screen. Given that the Restore function goes and gets the software from the iTunes server as the first step, it really wouldn't have been hard to warn us if this before we started the process.
Losers.

Oh I feel so sorry for all of you... at least ya'll have an iPhone unlike some of us who can't afford to shell out all that cash for the latest and greatest.

geez, some people just love to compain. Did you ever stop to think that AT&T upgraded their systems to improve your service? If they didn't and EVERYONE's iPhone had issues, then what?

Still no activation here.Interestingly enough, I actually activated 2 weeks ago at launch. My phone was dropping 2/3 of calls and sound quality was terrible. They swapped out my phone yesterday after I showed up to return it. I'd love to call and complain...but...

I had to swap my phone out this morning... the phone kept freezing up after receiving a call when the phone was plugged in and vibrated... weird, I know! After waiting for about 30 minutes, the rep showed my their iTunes app (which is different than ours) and showed me the pic on your homepage. So I sit here and wait yet again with this phone....

Been trying for the last 5-10 minutes (it's 4:20 EST) and it's not working. Guess it went down again shortly after they brought it back online.

same story here in san francisco. went to apple to have my phone replaced for ear speaker malfunction. trying to activate the new one "iphone activations are not available at this time."
makes a great comparsion between apple and at&t:
Apple: broken phone=receive new unit in less than 20mins.
at&t: gonna mess this up even when the golden goose comes in for them
f-in lame

I just bought my iPhone yesterday afternoon and tried to activate last night, and got the maintenance message, too. And then I tried activating today a few minutes after 3PM EST, and after it had "thought" for a minute or so, it indicated that it was doing activations at that time. Couldn't they have just provided an update to the maintenance issue?
