Let me preface this by saying I haven't tested this myself and you should read the warnings before you try this. Some rather complicated instructions for installing custom ringtones on the iPhone have been floating around the net of late. Unfortunately they required some pretty involved under-the-hood tinkering. The newly released iFuntastic is designed to simply this process immensely. This little program allows you to install and manage custom ringtones just by selecting them in a GUI. There is a warning that after using this iTunes won't automatically launch when you dock your iPhone, but you can still sync manually.
iFuntastic is a free download, but you will have to register at modmyiphone.com
Thanks, Kyle!
Update: Direct link (no registration required). iFuntastic is Intel only.

I don't need custom ringtones bad enough to do some ugly hack that might brick my iPhone, or in this case impedes the normal operation of the phone (no auto sync). Especially, when all the evidence we have shows that there just going to make it available later via an update.

While I understand your hesitation on messing with a $500-$600 gadget, I've been doing this for a few weeks now and I havent bricked it, since its a simple factory restore from iTunes.
I see not being able to select my tones through itunes already as "impeding the normal operation" ;)

I used this yesterday and it works fantastic!
*And actually, my iPhone DID sync automatically afterwards. I even pulled it off the dock and re-synced a couple more times just to be sure it wasn't a fluke.

I attempted to use this and some how my iTunes only showed my 8GB iPhone as having 265MB of space. Not space available but Total space. I had to do a restore and everything worked out ok but I still could not get the program to work.

Wow, how risky this sounds. Following steps and all..
Well, I'm trying out "iPhone Ring Tone Maker" which is fast and easy to use no risky methods that might lock up your iPhone.
Check out Macrumors.

You don't have to register to download. Click the Resd link from the article, and the Wiki has both our mirror and a RapidShare link. You can use either one.

I used this and it worked perfectly after crashing many times. The program does seem as if it freezes at times, but if you're patient, it'll come back and finish the job!

Check out version 2 at http://www.iphonealley.com/news/ifuntastic-2-0-released-with-added-features.
No registration required.
Greatly enhanced app now allows customization of carrier logo and main screen icon arrangement, too.
Still Intel Mac only! And please move version 1 somewhere else before unzipping - the app *must* be called iFuntastic.
