iPhone activation program released
If you've been wanting to activate your iPhone without iTunes so you can use a non-iPhone AT&T/Cingular SIM, or you just want to use your iPhone as an iPhonePod, I have some good news for you. The guys over at ModMyiPhone have introduced a program that doesn't require you to work from the command line.
Not everyone loves the command line. It's a basic fact. And, for those of you who have been waiting for a real application that avoids using Terminal commands, point your web browser at this page. iActivator wraps a GUI around iPhone activation, and makes it simple to use the jailbreak, iASign and iPhoneInterface tools.
For those of you still worried about turning your iPhone into an iBrick, keep in mind that this is still early software. You may want to wait a few weeks for the software (and the hacking tools that underlie the application) to gain stability. Also, be aware that the public link seems to be down. You may have to sign up for a (free) account before being allowed to download the members-only version. A final note: it's unclear whether this is a Universal binary solution or (as I'm guessing) Intel-only.
Thanks Kyle

Oh did they ? Ummm, ok, let's leave it like that, the wiki needs no popularity among average users (no sarcasm here)

They complain when you do post old news, and they complain when you DON'T post old news. You just can't win.
Anyway, thanks for the heads up! Looks like the walls are slowly coming down!

No offense TUAW but enough with 20 thousand iPhone stories. I'm sure there has to be other stuff going on in the Apple world besides the iPhone. The last few weeks I've come here I feel like I'm reading news-stand tabloids with the latest "news" from Hollywood actors. No content, just catchy stories hoping to get page visits.
In response to the typical "if you don't like it, don't read it" responses that's exactly what I'm going to do. See you in a few months, I hope you guys aren't saturated with only Leopard posts then.
Oh, it would also be great to have some visible place to send feedback, I'm not a fan of posting unrelated replies..

@Timeswift
Are you serious? I love the iPhone posts because Erica is actually on the front lines testing all the bleeding edge stuff that comes out for the iPhone for those that are a little uneasy messing with their phone. Have you seen how many of her stories have been Dugg? I used to rip on Erica but my opinion has totally changed about her and I apologize for my past posts. So we'll cya when 10.5 is released!

No offense, timeswift, but I think you're a flaming idiot. Like it or not, the iPhone *IS* news. Tell me, where are the Mac OS X updates? Where are the new Macs? What? No new Macs? Ok, then I guess the iPhone is it.
Thank you for doing us the favor of leaving TUAW. That means that there's one less insane crackhead for Erica and the other fine staff of TUAW to deal with.

Living in Europe (no iPhone for some time) and not all that enthusiastic about the device, it's been a boring couple of months for Apple news. Everything about OS X 10.5 was said last year, so there wasn't any news there either.
But I understand the significance of the iPhone for a lot of other people and this new development warrants attention.

I think some clarification needs to be made. From what i could gather from the actual website, this is not a way to activate the iphone to use it with any other att/cingular sim card, it will only allow you to unlock the phone to use the ipod/wifi functions. This doesnt appear to do the same thing as the hack posted last week does, which is activating the iphone with any att sim card. Please correct me if i am wrong

I have to agree that the iphone entries have gone a bit overboard and in some cases isn't much more than having an article about which hand Steve Jobs scratches his butt with while holding the iphone. Then there would be a followup as to how others could do it the same way. lol
Seriously though it seems as though the iphone is here to stay. Maybe it's time to restructure things to reflect the change in Apple's business? One idea would be to make this site more about general Apple news. Setup two other sites where one is for Mac specific news and the other for iphone/ipod/AppleTV news.
I'd still keep all of them in my rss feeds but it would certainly be easier to browse through if things could be divided up like I mentioned above. When I feel like viewing ipod/iphone/AppleTV news, I don't want to wade through Mac news either.

Is it any huge differences between iActivator and iPAT (http://www.hacktheiphone.com/iphone_bypass_activation.html)? iPAT looks more tempting, with its single button approach, but has to be placed in a specific folder. Haven't had the chance to test any of them yet, as i live in Norway and my iPhonePod isn't due here before some time next week.
