DemoApp is that mystery application that coexists in the iPhone's Applications folder along with all the standard apps like Google Maps, Calculator, Stocks, and so forth. We've known for a while that it had something to do with movies but until today, we weren't sure what it did. Today, I can confirm that it does what most people have suspected: it plays a single movie over and over in a repeat loop. It does not, as others hoped, allow you to play video out through your dock. Here's the down and dirty on DemoApp.
Where is DemoApp located? It's found in /Applications. You will not be able to see this application without hacking your iPhone.
How do I make my iPhone automatically play a movie? Place an h.264-encoded movie named Demo.mov into /private/var/root. Reboot your iPhone. (Power down and then re-power on.) The iPhone automatically opens your movie and begins playing it on a loop.
How do I make it stop? Remove the movie from /private/var/root and reboot.
While playing, will it export video out my dock? No. Just audio.
Why does it play in portrait mode? Presumably so it can remain docked and powered.
Does it have to be encoded in h.264? That's the only encoding I've tried.
Does it have to be named Demo.mov? Yes.
How did you figure this out? Testing and playing with the Unix strings command and, frankly, quite by accident.
How do I make DemoApp appear with my other Widgets? You can do this but it's really kind of pointless. You must edit /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/DisplayOrder.plist. Copy the file to your Mac, make a copy, and use Property List editor to move the com.apple.DemoApp dict pair from special into iconList. Return the edited version to the iPhone and reboot. To hide the widget, just restore the original DisplayOrder.plist.

just think its a little strange that there's no mention of this most likely being for Apple Store iPhones on display.. Just like the loops that play on the video iPods.

Yeah, this really isn't a big surprise. It's just the app they use to demo the iphone in the stores.

Yeah, a filter would be nice. I don't share the same level of disgust as Sven, but as an avid reader of the site, her posts seem to be of either the shockingly obvious or shockingly meaningless variety. This post as well as the iPhone "Purity test" seem to illustrate an overwhelming amount of meaningless, albeit well intentioned, posts throughout the day.

#3: What is your problem with Erica? She tries all of the stuff that most of us are to afraid to do. I find alot of her recent articles really interesting, and it helps me at least get a better understanding of the iPhone's software.
If you don't like her work, stop complaining, and don't read it. :\

I agree with #6.
If you don't like Erica's posts, don't read them. Other people do like them, for the reasons that Luigi poins out.
Also, it's incredibly rude to call somebody 'shockingly dumb' - not to mention hurtful.

i have a hard time believing, sven, that you didn't mean to be rude. you have a pretty flexible definition of rude, and i encourage you to examine that definition a little more thoroughly for the benefit of both your public and private discourse. in the meanwhile, tuaw is overall one of the most informative mac blogs out there, and a nice free boon to the technology community. at best, if you truly fail to see how step-wise observations on hacking the iphone are valuable to the iphone as an object in the abstract, then you could ahve asked. but, at worst, if you just wanted to set a torch of piss and vinegar to a writer, you could have kept it to yourself. because really, that was rude.

I hate to say this, but honestly, I think its because she's a "she" that many dudes have a problem with her...dudes love to hate on chicks in tech if they can't ogle their...
I happen to know that she actually, and surprisingly, and in suome cases "persistently/annoyingly"* does a lot of actual research and sourcing for her posts and they are almost always accurate how-to style things and not long winded unfounded opinion pieces and thinly veiled rumor pieces...like some other bloggers here.
:)
Show some respect.
Keep fightin' sista...on the forums and mailing lists, on the chats and irc...in the malls and in the em-mail boxes...go on, girl!
*That's a compliment Erica...oh of many other blogger 'round the blogsphere would do half as much research as you...

Sven, you're a self-important loser and a waste of comment space. Do you really think anyone cares about your imagined grudgefest against a TUAW writer?
Erica's posts help to give TUAW the great, level-headed calibre that it has.
Since we're giving opinions, I find her clear, no-nonsense info far more useful than someone like Ryan Block's often misinformed, snarky goading over on Engadget. Which is quite frankly where your comments belong - there's a lot of people like you there.

maybe I am crazy, but I just read the headline of an article. If it doesn't sound interesting I don't read it. Seems a lot easier then reading it just to complain about it.
And weather you like Erica's posts or not you gotta give her credit for un-begrudgingly fulfilling the request, and creating the feed.

Sven, self-adulation would be posting a comment that has no content other than to let other people know what you think of Erica. It had no useful information, the ONLY purpose of your comment was to say, "I'm Sven, and this is what I think."
Obvious, pure, self-adulation.
Erica's posts, on the other hand, do actually contain information that is used by people (follow the comments on her posts, many people do utilise her articles and thank her for them).
She did not post this article to (as you claim) boost her ego by saying, "look at what I can do", because she explains how to do it, thereby encouraging others to do it as well, thereby directly destroying any exclusivity.
Have you and the other haters not yet noted how much of a minority you represent on this site? Have you not noticed that the haters quickly grab the first few comments on Erica's articles, but then the next 15 comments, the next 30, the next (on some occasions) 50 comments are all from people thankful for her article and her writing style?
Information and opinion on Apple products belongs on this site. Opinion of bloggers does not. If you are so incredibly desperate to rate Erica (and if you stupidly think you are in a position to do so) then go somewhere were authors are rated and discussed, it ISN'T what this site is about.

While I enjoy nearly all of Erica's posts, this one did seem really obvious. So it's the loop played as a demo in stores. Wow.
But ALL the bloggers have "off" posts and so what?
Keep up the good work Erica! As another female techie I truly appreciate a lone female voice out there (and wonder why there aren't more on this blog).

Yeah ive never understood the Erica hate... Occasoionally she post something that is a total no brainer and i usually mock it to myself as im reading.. But hey... there is someone out there reading who was completely clueless to the information revealed until she posted it. And thats what its about... getting information out there. Throwing your 2ยข in on it and letting others do the same.
Personally i think the posting of the iTMS freebies and most of these 3rd party apps you guys drool over (Journaler, the twitter stuff, etc.), and this prepetual boner for iLife and its still non-existant update are retarded. Why? Cause they dont interest me. But its whatever... im sure they DO interest alot of you though. But you dont see me comment on every one of those posts how dumb the author is or how un-newsworthy the information is.
So basically... GET OVER IT. Go read your rumors about iLife and ignore her posts.

I know I'm late to this comment party (I was on a cross-country road trip with minimal net access), but I love the variety of topics available at TUAW. There are a lot of posts (like this one, in fact) that I never would have *asked* for, but find very interesting.
For the record, I love the reviews/updates of shareware and other third-party software, and I'm eagerly awaiting an updated version of iLife -- without a "perpetual boner." (I'm not mocking Ant, I just found that funny ... in principle, I agree with Ant. Read what you want, ignore the rest, leaving it for those who do like it.)
TUAW is a big place, with room for lots of people. I love the variety available here, because it is of a consistently high quality.
Rock on, Erica and other TUAW bloggers!
