iPhone firmware hints at new widgets, including MobileRadio

Tyler over at iPhoneology went diving into the iPhone's firmware, and found a preference file called "DefaultApplicationState.plist," apparently a list of widgets placed by Apple inside the iPhone.

Except that there's a few that we can't actually use yet...

com.apple.unitconverter
com.apple.widget.phonebook
com.apple.widget.translation
com.apple.widget.worldclock
com.apple.mobile.radio

That mobile.radio one looks especially enticing-- while built-in FM radio would be nice, it's more likely that Apple is expecting the iPhone to support streaming radio, just like that already found in iTunes.

Of course, this is all just speculation-- just because Apple laid out plans in the software for features like these doesn't mean that they're actually coming. And as a few folks have noted, they could just be holdovers from Apple's translation of OS X to the iPhone firmware. But because we know that more widgets and features are planned for the iPhone, these could be the groundwork of things we'll see implemented later.

Thanks, Reggie!

Uh, I don't know what type of iPhone you're using, but the World Clock is perfectly accessible and usable. I can gather why it may be difficult to find, you know, since it's inside that confusing "Clock" section of the phone.

They're most likely referring to the GPRS/EDGE/WiFi radio that provides the phone's data and voice connectivity. Notice that the radio isn't a widget.

It would be really cool if the "phonebook" widget was actually Apple's "people" widget on the desktop. If you haven't tried it out on your Mac yet, give it shot (with your name). It's really really spooky.

haha...internet radio would be so dumb w/edge. Rendering the phone useless so you can listen to radio? are you kidding?

I would LOVE to be able to listen to internet radio with my iPhone. That would be awesome!

I was hoping they would do something like that, and hopefully that's just what this is.

Cheers,
FL

Doesn't the "Clock" widget use the term "World Clock"?

My guess is that the mobile radio is probably for the headphone-with-integrated-FM-radio-receiver remote thing that works with most of the other iPods.
