Apple press event on August 7th

Rumors abound that Apple will be unleashing a brand new iMac on August 7th, which seems a little odd given that is very close to the beginning of the school year. However, given the existence of these photos of a purported new iMac keyboard and the fact that our sister blog Engadget was just invited to a press event on August 7th might prove me wrong.

The invite made it clear that this gathering is all about the Mac, so what do you think we'll see?

I think the new iMac will feature some kind of totally new-unexpected technology, like some implementation of multi-touch. Something really innovative.

I can't believe Apple will host a press meeting just to present a new enclosure for the iMac (brushed aluminum, thiner... those are not a big deals). They will introduce something to surprise the market.

New iMac of course, it's been so long! If they are dropping the 17" model and the mac mini, that leaves a big hole at the entry level. A new entry level mac would be nice (Mac nano perhaps? mini cube? something without a built-in monitor like an apple tv with web browsing). But what kind of new iMac? what we know: slim keyboard, thin, all-in-one, brushed aluminium (front and back? or just back with a black front, that would lead people to think it's a big iPhone with touch screen), new design, remote, most likely santa rosa chipset. What we don't know: VESA mount (makes sense for the 24" model.. at least not that ugly unifoot stand), LED backlit LCD (probably not since there's already a shortage for the MacBook Pro and there's no need for that power saving display), new mouse or a brushed aluminium mighty mouse... so many possibilities. But if it's all aluminium, that'd be more like a pro computer so again, a new consumer mac?

An entry level tower/minitower (Mini+ or just a called Mac) would be great. Single Core 2 Duo, upgradeable graphics card, HD, optical drive and RAM and I'm GTG. It should cost under US$800... I REALLY don't want to go the build it your self and install h4x0red Tiger route.

Hovercar! I say hovercar! Or maybe iHovercar. Or something. Or a new Mac or something. Maybe an updated Mac? How about that? How about a hovercar with an updated Mac in it? How about that, huh?

New iMac is a lock. All signs point there.
No ultra-portables. No significant laptop upgrades, if at all.
Silent kill-off of Mac Mini.
iWork, iLife, .Mac updates - all possibilities since it'd be a lame press event if all they released was an iMac.
Leopard just got another build update, so it's unlikely we'll see that finalized yet.
And the "one more thing"? If Steve makes an appearance at the event, there might be iPods. Without Jobs, it'll be September till we see new ones.

And the new iMac will be called "Mac", of course!
