Walt Mossberg's Got a Secret

Son of a gun, the click (after unlocking) is back! I swear it was gone from after the August 1 update (1.0.1) until yesterday, August 7. I did not notice the click anytime during this period -- and I was listening for it. But this morning Aug. 8 I noticed it had come back.

Assuming I'm not going crazy, my suspicion is that the click came back at the same time as the "magic" update on Aug. 7 that added the "Send to Web gallery" button to the Photos application.

Too bad; I enjoyed stealthily turning on my iPhone...

Exchange works much better now in the mail app. With 1.0 I could not see the subfolders in my mailbox. Now they're all visible. 1.0 had also created a "sent items" and "deleted items" folder as a subfolder of the inbox rather than using the subfolders of the whole mailbox. Also fixed.

Also, I had been unable to connect to the wifi router at my office (Qwest DSL modem with wifi built-in), and now that works like a charm. I had also noticed the improvement in accessory compatibility.

In the weather app, if there is no signal the weather from the last update will still be present. Before, it would say cannot update or something...

On the original software, after you slide to unlock, there was an audible click from the speaker. (This happened even if you changed Settings to turn off the keyboard click.)

On the new 1.0.1, this "unlock" click is gone. I prefer this, since turning on the iPhone now can be completely silent.

I know it's not much of a secret, but I can't say enough about the iPod stability fix. This was a BIG deal for me as I browse, and listen to music a lot (as I'm sure most of you do.

My Monster iCar charger now works, too. Oh happy days. Now I really can leave my iPod at home. (Sorry iPod. But you knew this was going to happen, right?)

Yawn.

Yeah, I stumbled on the car adapter fix a couple days ago. Until then, I was using a 3.6mm jack to my DLO FM transmitter. But I just tried it again for the heck of it and lo and behold.

With the new patch, when Safari crashes, at least it keeps all the URLs in their same tabs and then reloads them, like the Restore Tabs feature in Firefox 2 after Firefox closes unexpectedly. Before, when Safari relaunched, it gave me a single blank tab.

Oh, and Safari doesn't crash as often now. :)

Aaron, that was in 1.0.

This patch got my iPhone working with my iPod car adapter. That was my biggest let-down with the phone. Problem solved!
