iMac Software Update 1.0 available

Well, that was fast. Now available is iMac Software Update 1.0 for those spiffy new 20-inch and 24-inch iMacs, the ones with 2.0, 2.4, or 2.8GHz processors. It's just over 5MB and requires Mac OS 10.4.10.

What's included? Hold on to your hats, because here's the skinny, direct from Apple:

"Important bug fixes."

Wow.

Did they fix the shiny? No? Shame.

Yeah this update sorta fixed the graphics problem I was having with World of Warcraft, it increased the frame rate by 30% and fixed shader issues, they still have some ways to go until the graphics problem is fixed

I have to admit that Microsoft is fairly good at fixing bugs in the operating system in a timely manner, BUT they are absolutely horrible when it comes to updating any of their other software. The stock reply when you report a bug is "we will consider fixing that in the next release". Which means one or more years away. Apple does a much better job across all their software.

Fernando: what do you mean "already"? The earlier they get the bugs worked out, the better...and you would expect new products to have bugs. It's not like bugs develop over time...

The great thing about Apple is when they update a product, it's not just a crappy patch that causes more bugs than it fixes.

Still, I wish they (Apple) were a little more forth-coming in their change logs. Half the fun of downloading an update is seeing exactly what has changed or what was fixed.

I always think of it this way, when i used a windows box... never had an update from HP... at least Apple updates there computers, so that they run better for longer.

Did they also fix unimportant and/or vaguely important bugs as well?

This is comparable to the iLife ’08 upgrade costs. They can't upgrade a computer that's already boxed up and ready to ship. And think of it this way: Would you rather wait a couple of weeks for the new product to ship, or have an update a few days down the line?
Also, with real-world testers, numerous bugs can be found that were harder to replicate prior to shipping.
Overall, I say it's a net benefit for the consumer.

I guess that means that Apple is human (corporately speaking, that is) in that they (like many of the rest of us) have management that schedule product launches before the products are actually done. Keep in mind that these iMacs were fabricated and imaged long before the announcement, and the engineers probably had some updates for them while they sat in crates in Cupertino.
