Sticking with the Apple Remote

On that unboxing video we posted the other day (sorry about the ads-- point taken), it was noted that the Apple Remote no longer stuck to the side of the new iMac. Reader Sal emailed me this morning to point out that not only did his Remote not stick either, but apparently he rang up Apple, and the "product specialist" said the Remote should stick. I also called Apple, and they told me the Remote should stick as well.

But neither the Unboxing Remote or Sal's Remote actually stuck, so what's the deal? Our commenters have noted over the past few days that aluminum eats magnetic fields, so it could be that the aluminum makes sticking the Remote on a no go. I don't know exactly how it worked with the old iMac (whether there was just a magnet inside or in both the Remote and the iMac), but Sal points out his Remote won't stick to the fridge either. After he told Apple that, they even offered to send him a new Remote, so maybe the Remote he has is defective (which means this is the second new defective product we've heard about in the past few days). One more wrinkle-- other commenters have suggested that instead of the side, the Remote now sticks to the "chin" of the iMac, but Sal tried that and said it didn't work either.

At any rate, Apple says the Remote should stick, but everything we've seen says it doesn't. Which is it? Anyone have a new iMac and want to confirm that it sticks? It's not a big loss, of course, if it's really not sticking. But like the Open Apple button, that's another special Apple touch that's been lost on the new iMac.

Update:
This video, courtesy Rizza in the comments, shows the Remote stuck on the front right corner of the glass (which is one way to get around the aluminum, I guess). So looks like Apple moved the magnet there.

Want your remote to stick to the new iMac? Get a circular piece of velcro (aluminum gray anyone?) put it on the lower right side . . . problem solved. Want to know my lo-tech answer to the annoying help key?

I have the new I mac and the remote will not stick. I have found a spot on the front near where the magnet should be that tells me there is a magnet there, but not enough to hold the remote.
Any suggestions

Just to clear up any confusion about the magnet vs. aluminum issue: the aluminum would only affect things if one or both magnets were electromagnets and they put out an AC magnetic field. If they're both permanent magnets (like the magnets we all have on our refrigerator doors), the aluminum wouldn't be a factor directly-aluminum has about the same magnetic permeability (attractiveness to a DC magnetic field basically) as air, paper, etc. The magnets would still "see" the aluminum as a separation distance, but wouldn't otherwise be bothered by it.

It could be that the magnets aren't any good-if they were knocked around in shipping to Apple, exposed to heat or cold, that kind of thing. Or they're installed incorrectly-e.g. if both have the same North pole facing, they'll repel each other rather than attract. But I haven't seen anything about remotes jumping away from the iMac, either.

If you really want your remote to stick, go buy a strong small magnet and attach it to the side of your screen, place it on the inside of the case (would require a lot of work, thought), or on the inside of the panel covering your RAM slot. I did this (magnet on the inside) to a Dell 24" screen and it works just like the iMac screens. I am sad to see Apple drop this feature but there are ways around it.

Sorry for double commenting. I wanted to make one correction.

There is other metal in the remote that will work with the magnet so the battery is not the ONLY thing that does it.

Here are some things you should be aware of:

Yes, you are correct in saying that the aluminum will affect the magnetic field. It would draw the field out along the lengths of the aluminum so that the field would be far weaker at the closest point on the other side. I can elaborate if you want. Just ask me to.

I believe that the engineers probably ran in to this issue and left a magnet out.

Solution:

Add a magnet to the remote. It'll stick to the aluminum much better that way because the impeding body is plastic and not a big long sheet of aluminum. This sounds weird and incorrect but I assure you this would be the best method.

There is NO magnet in the current remotes. You are really just sticking the battery to the magnet. (take a typical CR2x coin battery and stick it to the corner of your Macbook's monitor, or wherever your mac has a magnet and watch it stick)

If you open up your remote you'll find a nice amount of room relative to most Apple products. All they need to do is insert a strong enough magnet and voila, you can put your remote anywhere you want on your new iMac!

So here is the question:

Was that the plan and they sent out the old remotes by accident? On purpose?

Is this a future plan?

Is this going to never happen?

My 24" does not stick. I can sense the magnet but its too weak to hold. A little piece of velcro works in a pinch. Maybe I should insist they send a matching black one, better yet a Red U2 edition to the remote.

i don't know about the effects of magnets on aluminium, but the older iSights stuck on the Cinema Displays with magnets. that worked.
