Study: iPhone's keyboard two times slower than other phones

I don't know if you were on the TUAW Talkcast Aftershow with us last Thursday, but if you were, you would have heard a member of the TUAW staff (who shall remain nameless) saying something very forceful about the iPhone keyboard: "Let's face it-- it sucks."

Yes, for all the "oh, it gets better when you learn it" and "you just have to trust it" comments, it seems that the naughty secret lying in the heart of every iPhone owner out there is that iPhone keyboard is not the easiest to type on. And now Science has confirmed it: a new study says the iPhone's keyboard is two times slower than phones with QWERTY keyboards on them. The study examined people (who didn't own iPhones-- more on that in a second) sending fixed length text messages both on their own phones (half QWERTY and half numeric) and on the iPhone, and QWERTY was the fastest. The iPhone keyboard took twice as long (the numeric keypad took about the same time as the iPhone), and participants had more errors on the iPhone than their own phones.

But iPhone stalwarts, worry not, because that "it gets better when you learn it" excuse still holds true-- none of these people were actually "used" to an iPhone. If we really wanted a completely objective idea of iPhone speed vs. QWERTY (or numeric) speed, we'd have to get an iPhone owner to match up against another owner, both experienced with using their phones. How would that pan out?

Oh, and I should put the TUAW staff member's comment in context-- we were talking about the fact that the iPhone doesn't support using an actual Bluetooth keyboard. Compared to the no-button keyboard on the iPhone, it seems our staffer would rather have a full sized QWERTY keyboard hooked up via Bluetooth any day.

Thanks, Wako!

Horseshit. I BLAZE on the iphone keyboard. I stopped using other phones for texting etc. and the iphone has reinvigorated my willingness to do email, text etc. BECAUSE of the keyboard.

Just a silly study. I've had a Treo, and this is SO much faster for me. Sure I hit the occasional wrong button, but the system generally does a fine job figuring out what I'm saying. It's funny to watch how bad you're screwing up a word, and the system just fixes it along the way. I've got no problems with the keyboard.

And, oh, they got 30 MINUTES to improve their iPhone typing ability. Give them an iPhone for a couple weeks, THEN test it.

Even IF this were true, I DON'T CARE, the benefits of having a full size multitouch screen far outweigh any downsides.

I'm not so sure that my virtual ball interface would be a faster way to type, but it might have some advantages if you have big fingers or poor vision. Anyway - I encourage anybody to make a demo so it could be evaluated.

Well, the comment citing Justine's 30,000 text messages is extremely misleading. Listen to her on the last TWIT (or is it MacBreak)...she specifically states that she got 30,000 text messages, but not that she sent them...apparently the bulk of the texts were incoming twitter feeds and other broadcast SMS services.

Either way, Justine, as lovely and sweet as she seems, needs to get a real life. Who on earth has time to read/write 30,000 text messages, even on a very respectable keyboard like the iPhone's.

Like everyone else, I am WAAAAAAY faster typing on the iPhone than my previous BB and Treo... and I was fast on those.
Everyone I know thinks the iPhone is way better and easier if you don't care about tactile.

UserCentric's FAQ states that they were not paid by a third party company to conduct this research:

http://www.usercentric.com/news.asp?ID=387

But with a recent client list that includes Motorola (local to UserCentric), Verizon, Microsoft, and LG, pretty clear who butters their bread.

Even if they claim independence and objectivity, their study is fatally compromised by the company they keep, and the dollars they reap. No objective study would be based on the ludicrous premise of testing first-time predictive soft keyboard users against their long-time experience with familiar interfaces.

I tried it for the first time today in a shop and became convinced that it wouldn't take me a week to learn it - just a day. Far more better than T9 and easier than a qwerty keyboard with the tiny buttons they usually have.

Can't wait 'till it arrives in Europe!

Has anyone tried changing the layout of the iPhone's keyboard? The QWERTY keyboard was designed for 10 finger typing. The JumpX keyboard used in the Familiar Linux distribution for handheld devices like the iPaq is designed for stylus or 1 finger typing.

You can see the layout here: http://jumpx.sourceforge.net/

And this page talks about why a different layout than QWERTY is required for 1 finger typing.

I'd love to see a JumpX keyboard for the iPhone.
