Apple signs up 3 European carriers for the iPhone

I know our friends in Europe have been anxiously been awaiting news on when the iPhone (did you know Apple made a cellular phone? It is true!) will arrive on their shores. The Financial Times is reporting that Apple has reached a deal with three different providers:
  • T-Mobile of Germany
  • O2 in the UK
  • Orange of France
Interestingly, FT reports that Apple is getting 10% of the fee associated with calling and text features for every iPhone sold through these providers which is the first deal of its kind in Europe. Makes one wonder what kind of deal Apple has with AT&T here in the States.

An official announcement is expected to come from Apple and these carriers in August.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

what would its price be in euros? will it be a direct conversion from USD or a little extra added? I'm very curious to see its sales numbers in EU, what with no 3G etc.

Ruben, that is only the case in Holland, not in the other countries.

Too bad we still don't know anything about the iPhone in Holland

You can thank Rogers for screwing over Canada on the iPhone situation.

They'd rather charge $100 per month for 200 megs then allow unlimited for what Apple is surely demanding.

This morning 22/08/2007 we noticed that on our mobile the "G" for GPRS on O2 in the UK had changed to "E" for Edge network.

Seems like O2 has been upgrading their network quietly in the background and has switched it on this morning.

Does this mean an announcement will be coming soon??

I have taken pictures of this showing on the mobile phone (O2 Network UK.)

And what about Italy? Do you think we can hope to see the iPhone by 2008?

Oooh, makes me wonder why I live in a so small country called Belgium where that kind of tech piece will probably never come, or at least not officially, because a stupid law forbids to sell a mobile contrat WITH a mobile phone. I know that stuff well, I work in a telecom company.
Or... maybe one day SJ will come in the offices to sign an agreement =) ? No.

Some of these carriers are active in more than one country (Orange for instance is working in: France, UK, Switzerland, Poland and others). So my question is...

How can you lock the iPhone? I think it will be easier to hack around the iPhone to allow people from another country with the same operator to use the iPhone.

Someone asked why not Vodafone?
Well I think an explanation might be that they have become a "brand" and no longer just a carrier. They sell music, ringtones, images and customize their phone appearance to suit their corporate image. So I think Apple and Vodafone strongly disagreed on that (I couldn't imagine an Apple iPhone with a Vodafone stick on it or a "Vodafone Live" menu).

I hope Apple messes up the European carrier market big time, since it deserves to be shaken up. Prices are high and phones tend to be all levelled to the same features because of "carrier branding" pressure. Take a Vodafone Nokia and a Vodafone SonyEricsson, they look exactly the same(this of course also applies to all the major carriers)! So I am really looking forward to some new handsets..

Interesting. In The Netherlands we have both T-mobile AND Orange, while O2 used to own Dutch company Telfort. Are we next? :-)

Funny, since the news here is that Orange is about to be taken over by T-Mobile. So, there are in fact only 2 providers left then ;)
