PandoraJam 1.0
I listen to music the way Jobs intended: on my iPod that is filled to the brim with only iTunes Store purchased music, however, I hear tell that there are some people out there that enjoy web based Internet Radio stations. Pandora is a favorite of these darn hippy freaks, with its large selection and easy to use UI. Sadly, a web service simply can't offer up the bells and whistles that an OS X app can. That's where PandoraJam comes in. This $15 app streams music from Pandora and it lets you record songs in AAC format which are then imported into iTunes with cover art and the tags you've set. It also streams Pandora to an Airport Express so you can jam to your LSD inspired tunes on your HiFi.

You agree that you will not:
3.2 copy, store, edit, change, prepare any derivative work of or alter in any way any of the tracks streamed through the Pandora Services;
Now, being a user of the BitTorrent, I usually say screw that. But Pandora is one of the good guys. This app is going to wind up being a tool for the dark empire that is the RIAA.
The fact that they are FREAKING CHARGING for this software is ridiculous. What? Did this guy break his leg chasing ambulances, so he turned to cocoa programming?
Someone needs to come out with an app that lets me steal all the software from BitCartel's site.
Does this app actually download the mp3 from Pandora's servers, or does it record the streamed audio?
I ask because I can DEFINITELY tell a difference in quality when comparing a song streamed through the Pandora flash player and the same song downloaded from Pandora's servers.
For those who don't mind getting their hands dirty..
If you want to download a song from Pandora.. get the Firefox extension httpguidedog, and watch the HTTP GETs while listening to Pandora.
You will notice there are GETs from audio-XXXX.pandora.com .. those are the songs!
If you want to download the songs, the last song played is usually the last GET URL with audio in the address (but it MAY be the second to last, since Pandora pre-loads the next track on occasion).
The GET URLs will be in the format: audio-XXXXX-XXXXX.pandora.com/access/XXXXXXXXX?version=4&lid=XXXXXXX&token=XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
The X's after /access/ is actually a large number, but determines the file name.. so change this as you see fit (e.g. add an appropriate extension ::cough:: mp3 ::cough::) just make sure to leave the lid and token
Open the URL in a new window/tab and you should get a download prompt!
You may notice some other interesting GET URLs.. images-XXXXX-XXXXX.pandora.com ... album art!
You're kidding, right? A commercial, for-money application that helps you steal Pandora's music?
Ignoring whether or not such an app is ethical or not - how long before Pandora comes down on this guy like a two ton weight? They wouldn't have any choice, he's undermining their entire business model and any chance they have of surviving the copyright fight that their in.
I like the idea of this app, but I am always uncomfortable about paying for software that does things that might get it shut down one day. If the RIAA comes along and tells them to stop, all of a sudden I have no more app (or one that can no longer do what I bought it for). Not to mention, would the developer be obligated to provide refunds if it stopped working? Is this why most of these kind of borderline-illegal apps are free?
August 22 2007 at 11:25 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI reside in Denmark in the EU, and the current licensing laws makes it too expensive for pandora to run over here. I would really love to use this app and discover new music in an easier way, but sadly that's not possible right now. I guess I just have to wait...
