It's official: Apple press event Sept. 5

We heard a rumor not long ago, and today Engadget confirms the date: Apple will hold a special press event on Sept. 5th. The invitation they received (where's ours, Apple?!?) looks like coverflow as displayed by an iPhone. Hmmm...

The invite is as cryptic as always, so I guess it's up to us to provide wild and baseless conjecture. Let's get started.

See you then, folks.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Spero siano i nuovi iPod. Mi piacerebbe un iPod Video "touchscreen" da 120 GB. Incrociamo le dita....
I hope it's the new iPods. I'd like a "touchscreen"-120GB iPod Video. Keeping my fingers crossed....

New iPod is certain.

"*Buy a qualifying Mac and iPod from Apple or a participating Apple Authorized Campus Store from June 5, 2007, through September 16, 2007, and receive a mail-in rebate up to $199. Terms and conditions apply. Click here for full details."

Apple likes to announce iPods in September, so the 16th is probably around when they will come out. I also read apple is phasing out Old iPod production.

I can totally understand the need for tactility on an iPod for music, but not putting a big screen on the new iPod will make it seem underwhelming and dated compared to the iPhone. It's almost like Apple HAS to do it now. Plus what better way to increase people's use of iTunes video store than to give them a real incentive like a true video iPod?

If the new iPod is a touch screen model and there are new games for it then it would be logical to assume that those games would also work on the iPhone. Maybe a few new features would be included with the firmware download that will enable the games.

I also think the re-mastered catalog of the Beatles would be logical given that this is a music event and that all their solo work has been released over the last two months. The album artwork shown in the invitation may not be theirs, but it is certainly Beatle-esque (that Beastie Boys cover is straight-up Yello Submarine.) And if you really want to make a splash you might consider a special edition Beatles iPod or perhaps U2-like complete Beatles catalog deal.

The fifth's my birthday! woot!

Anyone think they'll upgrade the 5G ipods to OSX?

Yeah, me neither. Fun thought though, since I don't need to replace my 40GB video one right now, and I just got a MacBook in May...

Clearly a reference to the Beatles joining itunes. Look for Paul and Ringo to be there.

If they do do HD TV, I hope they offer the "upgrade" for existing purchases. I also hope if they do something to the Apple TV it is software wise, because I bought one a few weeks ago (loving it btw).

Obviously this is some iPod announcement. What I'd love to have would be HD material on the iTunes store. With the new TV season starting soon, having iTunes sell the shows in HD would be so nice. A boy can dream....

It is clearly some music-centric announcement they are going to make. The iPod in the invitation looks like the current one :-)

Anyhow..
I think:
- Apple will release new iPods, and they are likely to be built around the iPhone software (which means OSX, although in a different form (I don't expect a touch screen interface)
- Apple will communicate some release plans for video content in Europe (besides the UK, in which it already took place)
- Apple will also communicate some new features for the iPhone and/or the Apple TV (they have long been promised, so I think it might be about time)

What do I think they will release for the Apple TV (should my scenario prove to be correct)? IPTV features and/or USB harddrive compatibility and/or NAS compatibilty and/or ability to watch the interactive booklets on the Apple TV (such a shame I cannot see the lyrics on my High Def TV when a song is playing)

I don't think they will release Leopard in advance. Builds are still in developers hands and, considering the good sales trend, there is absolutely no need to rush a release of Leopard at this time.

Better release all products that run "variations" of Leopard (Apple TV, iPhone, new iPods) prior to releasing Leopard.
As it looks like, many devices will then be "Leopard ready" (not just because a sticker says so...) and profit from Leopard. I think soon after Leopard many devices will get new features (looking forward to that) and better integration.

I still think Leopard "home server" would be a great device (why not use a hybrid between MacMini (form factor) and AppleTV (single core, low price, single purpose version of OSX))!!!

All in all this press event looks very much like a music centric event.
Come to think about it.. Maybe Apple will announce they will create a new music label (that would be "boom") and Madonna as a first artist (that would be "boom boom").

Disclaimer: all of these are just personal takes :-)
