Amex mulls iPhone purchase rebate policy

Readers report that calls to the American Express Return Protection line (1-800-297-8019) are being met with mixed results. Some readers say they are now accepting claims concerning the $200 dollar iPhone price drop, others have had less luck When I called, I was told that customers would be sent to a claims examiner to determine whether the difference in purchase price would be covered.

I placed a call to Molly Faust, the American Express Vice President of Public Affairs and Communications for U.S. Consumer Card and Customer Service Delivery. She told me that she was already looking into this matter and promised to get back to me.

According to one TUAW reader, a protection-line operator said "the number of calls we've received about this is utterly insane."

More as this develops.

Update: Molly Faust contacted me again and says to emphasize that this is being handled on a case-by-case basis and that the refunds are not an official program or policy.

Ok, i am probably late in this reply but i believe that all the people that are saying stuff like:
1) you complain about....
2) its technology....
& stuff like so are just mad people because they do not have an american express card and could not actually get the money back... they lost 100$... plus the 100$ they got back they had to spend at apple anyways... so didnt get any gain from it!!!
This is why i have american express black/platinum and normal!!! its the way to go!!!! go AMEX

I received a $105.00 refund from AmEx yesterday. I received it within minutes of requesting my Apple refund. I wonder if the systems are connected? Thank you American Express and Apple - you have a loyal and appreciative customer.

i got a credit for 100 from amex (member since 87) for my 4 gig iphone. I think that was more than fair. i am still entitled to $100 apple credit, so I am ahead of the game and will continue to use my amex gold for major purchases. I like the double the warranty period protection. amex was very professional, sending me email confirmation and I saw credit listed as "goodwill refund" on my statement.

AE called today to confirm the refund that was already confirmed via email around 10 days ago. Because they only mentioned one refund in this phone message,(and I bought two phones and was told I would get two refunds), I called AE price protection. The first operator said "maybe it's because Apple gave the $100 back" that my message only referred to $200+ as my refund. Luckily, someone who knew more took over quickly and he confirmed that both my phones were indeed refunded the $200+tax as per my emails.

But I post this in case any of you get someone who says that to you. I know this is being handled on a case by case basis, so your mileage may vary, but ask to speak to someone higher up if you are a long term good customer (in my case, over 20 years, excellent record) with AE and not satisfied. It might just be that you've reached someone who doesn't know.

The poster who was told no one had gotten any refunds was speaking to the wrong person at AE. They are handling it on a case by case basis, but I have gotten email confirmation (the day after I made my call) that my $200 and taxes x 2 phones is being credited back. I have Plat and have had it for 20 years and with a perfect record of payment.

What I figured out is that although they no longer have a price protection guarantee, they do have loss, theft and I think damage. And with apple dropping the price so drastically in only two months, you had an unprecedented situation here and they wanted to avoid having a lot of "lost" iphones. It may even be that the deal was hammered out with some cooperation or at least discussion with Apple (not sure about that). But in any event, the refunds are generating goodwill with Apple and AE. Don't give up with your credit card company.

Thank you Erica (who I see is also good at cracking the code) for bringing this to our attention!

I received my credit today. I also received confirmation of it in the snail mail yesterday. My Dad has received nothing yet, and he called 10 minutes after me. I bought mine on 6/29 as did my father.
Good luck all.

Post number 11 by Robert says it best and just like Kacy I find the name calling by Anthony totally unnecessary, immature and useless. I am amazed at the intelligence shown by some of these arguments. If I paid for insurance and an unfortunate event happened that may or may not be covered by that insurance, it is NOT greedy nor stupid to find out whether I am covered by that insurance or not and to make a claim if it applies. I am simply exercising my membership rights. Maybe some of us are too rich (especially if you can afford the $175 membership fee) and could not care less about the price difference but that too is your right.

The greedy ones are the ones who have no price protection insurance and are now demanding a refund! It is unfortunate that Apple has dropped the price to create a bigger demand but what is more unfortunate is all these early buyers who did not think of the consequence of their early purchase! Grow up and don't blame others for your misfortune.

I called AmEx on Thursday morning. The rep was friendly and obviously had spoken to other iPhone buyers, since she asked if I had the 4 or 8 gig version. All she would do is say that she'd file a claim for me without making any promises.

BTW, I wouldn't be bothered if the price protection didn't apply in this case, but I do expect to be treated no differently than cardholders who have gotten a $200 refund.

I contacted Chase Visa for a refund. They stated that the AT&T store was providing $200 refunds per iPhone.

I went to the AT&T store today and requested the refund for my two iPhones, they stated that only purchases within the last 14 days would be eligiable for a refund. They stated that I could go to the Apple store for the $100 refund.

I called Chase Visa back. They are filing a dispute to AT&T and providing me an instant $200 per phone. Chase Visa felt good about the chances for a favorable ruling on the dispute.

I just called (Sep 9, 7 am EST) the above number and the first question I was asked was whether I was calling about an iPhone. I guess they have been inundated.

Then she read me a script that said that AmEx does NOT offer a price protection plan, only a return protection plan up to $300. Upon rigorous questioning she claimed that NO AMEX CARD and NO ONE is being offered the $200 refund, despite claims in the media. (EVEN if you have a black Amex.) I grilled her politely but rigorously and asked her if she was comfortable making this absolute statement that NO ONE was being offered this refund, and she confidently said YES, she is comfortable. There are no exceptions.

I would like to hear further from someone who actually gets a discount from AmEx.

For the record, I have an AmEx Blue and have had it in excellent standing for 10 years.
