iPhone unlocks go on sale... and why don't we care?

Well that's it. Engadget revealed that iPhoneSIMfree's unlocking solution is up and running today, and they're now on sale (in fact, our Weblogs, Inc. brethren are giving them away as we speak). Hype, prices, and sketchy profiteering aside, what's done seems to be done. If you want your iPhone unlocked, have at it.

Why aren't the Mac faithful more excited? Europeans are definitely interested-- we've already heard from a few of them, including reader Callum, who really want to use their iPhones. But from my general sense of the population, iPhone owners, especially Cult of Mac folks, aren't jumping at the chance. Gadgetheads like Engadget love it, but you TUAWers, despite the AT&T hate (which I share, and I'm not even an AT&T customer yet), aren't that into an unlock. As Engadget says, the iPhone hackers aren't going to bother to reverse engineer iPhoneSIMfree's solution. The whole community seems to be saying, "meh."

Part of the problem is the warranty, I'd expect-- that's why I'm not going to unlock my iPhone when I eventually pick it up. And the other part is the fact that I'm sticking with Apple, even if they price drop in another few months and require me to be with AT&T. I want my iPhone to do everything it can, and if this unlock breaks anything, or won't vibe with the Visual Voicemail, or who knows what else, then iPhoneSIMfree can keep their $100 offer.

But enough about what I want-- let's ask you, TUAWers. What do you think of the unlock?

I agree, this 99US$ application will also be hacked by hackers. Soon! Believe me, that's the normal lifecycle for this type of software.

This is a lousy poll. How about the option "sure, I'd unlock it, but I don't need it." I wouldn't consider the service because I rarely leave the US, but if I were a regular international traveler I'd certainly unlock my phone.

I'm with wako. I'm actually surprised to see so little shock at the absurd price. You can get pretty much any phone here unlocked at the market for about £5 ($10). I'd assumed that since it was an iPhone the unlock would cost $20, maybe, at a push, as much as $40. But $100? They're having a laugh. I'll wait and see what the iPhone plan here is like and if it sucks, which I'm almost certain it will, I'll buy an iPod touch and get another free Nokia or Motorola. I'm guessing we'll be paying at least £30 or £35 a month + another £20 or £25 for data. They'll probably use it to try to sneak in a 2 year contract, too, which hasn't been much of a success for the main mobile companies here. If the contract is over 1 year, well, I'm back to the iPod touch again.

I'd pay $100 if the silly buggers would finish the job. Their installed software needs to handle diddling the phone when the SIM is changed rather than the user needing to use iAsign.

well I will wait for the 16 GB iphone with GPS and 3G and gladly unlock it. Menwhile, the unlocking price will eventually drop or a genius is going to hack the unlock from iphonesimfree and post it for free on the internet...
My 2 cents.

I guess buying that software also includes future updates to re-unlock it when Apple patches the iphone and disables the hack. And, let's face it, it won't be a lifetime support task as it will probably get a few patches this year and maybe one or two in the next year after gen 2 comes out and then nothing. I'd unlock it in a sec, just to see how it's done and to get away from restricted network options (I don't care about visual voicemail, I don't even have simple voicemail activated on my cell now).

BUT: 100$ sounds too much and my guess is small, local used gsm phone vendors or repairers will possibly get copies of that soft and do unlockings en masse at a lower price. Or free torrents will appear all over the net?

I'll wait for the European iPhone first anyway, see, if it brings 3G finally, and then I'll consider buying one and unlock it (if it will be locked at all).

You don't get it. ATT service and coverage simply fails for many folks outside of their "market". I'm one of them. I spent 13 days trying to get an iPhone to work with ATT and failed. Even got apple to exchange the phone I got from ATT thinking the cellular radio or antenna was bust. Nope. TMobile, 5 bars. ATT No Service or extraordinarily varying signal.

So the unlock is for folks like me, as well as the european crowd. Also for me when I travel in europe. And don't forget that TMobile is at least $10 and often $15 less per month.

The poll doesn't actually have an option that fits my scenario (and likely some other individuals as well.) I am already with AT&T, am a solid Apple fan, don't mind paying the price for the service or the iPhone, but need to be able to change sims regularly and need to be able to do so while having legitimate maanufacturer support. ALL other handset manufacturers offer this, Apple falls short.
