Rogue Amoeba releases free Ringtone Maker

Today brings a lovely treat from Rogue Amoeba, the makers of Audio Hijack Pro and Fission. They've posted MakeiPhoneRingtone, a free utility that converts any AAC file into an iTunes 7.4.27.4.1-compatible Ringtone. Drop the file onto its window and a second or two later, it appears in iTunes as a new ringtone. No file renaming, no special tricks. It just worked. I synced it over to my iPhone without any snags.
Of course, Rogue Amoeba hopes that you'll use its Fission editor to make those ringtones. If you're like me and prefer non-music-ringtones, its Audio Hijack Pro may be a better choice for recording sounds like a knock on the door or the most annoying ringtone ever made.

So where do we get non-musical ringtones? I like the ones from Installer.app but I hunger for more.

I just used this to transfer some Family Guy ringtones and it worked flawlessly. Thanks for the heads up!

For those who are looking for more generic ringtone makers try http://www.tonebee.com they have a straightforward, online tool to create ringtones from any MP3s you own. Great thing is that it doesn't require download and install of any software.

For non-musical ringtones, try looking in GarageBand's "FX" section.
Some possibilities there... There are also "Cell Phone" sounds for
that old-school ringtone sound. Also try "Cop Show clav 12" from the loops, it's pretty funky. Musical, but not a song...

I like ringtone that are effects and not songs too. That is another reason I would not buy one from iTunes.
Here is a my current favorite, I used the old rename trick to get it on to my iPhone.

Anyone else having problems getting this to work? I use Fission to create a ringtone, save it, drag into MakeiPhoneRingtone, ITunes fires up and when I sync I get a message that the file "cannot be played on this iPhone".

I wonder if this utility can be used to create ringtones and then bluetooth them over to phones other than iPhone.

sorry, but no matter how horrible that ringtone you posted is, it doesn't hold a candle to the one that boingboing posted quite awhile back. sadly, i can't find the audio file any more, but the story says it all: http://www.boingboing.net/2005/01/24/the-horrible-grunt-o.html

#11, this may not be the file you were originally looking for but if it sounded anything like this video, I'd have to agree that that is one of the worst things I've ever heard: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SU44KwIfBXM

I can't drop the ACC file into this program, it does not do anything. Any advice?

I just accidently stumbled upon an awesome tip. If you use an UNREGISTERED version of Fission, it will only save your files faded in and out. They mean for this to be a limitation that will compel you to buy the software, however it creates PERFECT ringtones. I picked a couple good techno tracks, and the way it fades in and out seriously makes the coolest ringtone effect.
This makes it sound way better than the crappy ringtones from the carriers. They just turn the music on and off which sounds horrible. Fading the sounds in and out is smooths it out and makes it much more appealing.
So, if you want make a good ringtone get Fission and use this tool. But dont register it or you'll lose this awesome fade in / fade out effect!
