Apple adds "Top Ringtones" feature to iTunes store (US)

Just 24 hours after enabling ringtones in the US iTunes store, Apple has added a "Top Ringtones" tracker [iTunes link] to the front page. As of this writing, Nickleback has a lock on the #1 slot [iTunes link].

This demonstrates that someone is buying these (just not very many TUAW readers). I'll admit that the next time my iPhone rings, everyone around me will be treated to Eddie Van Halen's solo from Unchained. I hope they like it.

I may be old school, but I preferred the days when ringtones were midi based. Then at least the tunes had a clear melody.

Once phones went beyond polyphonic to being MP3 capable, they became pathetic little ghetto blasters that simply didn't have the acoustics to preserve the identity of the complex waveform they were rendering. It's really an insult to music to hear it played so distorted from a tiny speaker.

I wouldn't mind at all if 20K .mid ringtones came back on the scene, or as #1 suggests, recordings of simple phone sounds were made available.

That short list right there is exactly why this is a bad idea.

This makes me wonder if most iTunes users know that the ringtones are for iPhone, and not just whatever phone they happen to have. A lot of drunk frat guys like nickelback and own iPods, but not iPhones. They are however, drunk and dumb enough to think iTunes can magically put ringtones on their RazR or Sidekick.

I am so bummed that all of the Van Halen songs I purchased from iTunes were different versions (different albums/compilations) than the ones selectable for ringtones. Very frustrating because there are usually 6 versions of any given VH song. So, I would have to buy a second "version" of the exact same song to then be allowed to buy the ringtone!! BTW - I want the Mission Impossible ringtone I had through Verizon back.

I have to wonder if this feature is incomplete right now, when I visited the link in the story iTunes is listing 10 our of 100 songs as not available in Ringtone format. Someone else confirm this?

Wow, anybody who would buy a Nickelback ringtone deserves to have their money taken.

I am thankful that Apple added the Top Ringtones but it would be nice if they would offer some sort of ability to browse just ringtone-able songs or an advanced search for it. I searched for 30+ songs yesterday and only one song actually had a ringtone option. I gave up in frustration.
