iMac Software Update 1.1

Apple has released yet another tersely worded update, this time for everyone's favorite all in one Mac: the iMac. The iMac Software Update 1.1, ' provides important bug fixes and is recommended for 20-inch and 24-inch iMac models with 2.0, 2.4, or 2.8GHz processors.'

Apple really doesn't make it easy to blog about these updates, since their descriptions tend to be a little light on details. But it is important and fixes bugs... so you know, download it and stuff.

Thanks, monkeyclaw.

i just downloaded and installed the 1.1 software update and my computer has been sitting at a blue screen with the cursor in the top left corner for at least 5 minutes. is it hanging or is this how long it takes to patch in all the new stuff?

Has anyone tried using FW TD mode with an iBook G4 (or possibly some other G4 based Macs) to see if a common problem with TD Mode has been remedied?

Cheers

After I installed this patch today, I had crash after crash. The machine would last anywhere between 0 min (e.g. wouldn't even finish booting up) to 5 min (could get logged in & start a couple of apps) before it crashed and required a power cycle to restart. I was also getting random graphics glitches (e.g. small black bars with little random white dots like the person above described).

As it turns out, the machine wasn't actually crashing, just the video drivers. The screen would freeze up and you wouldn't see any responses to mouse clicks or keyboard operations. However, you could still mount filesystems from the machine over the network & other machines could see and share it's iTunes library.

I spent about 3 hours on the phone with Apple tech support trying disk scans, safe mode boots, boots from CD, etc, etc. At the end of it all, we did an archive/reinstall from CD. I then applied every patch EXCEPT the iMac 1.1. It's been absolutely rock solid since then. No problems at all.

This is an a 2.8GHz that is otherwise stock config.

@21 Please don't insinuate that I am 12. If you read the news and know the latest then you know that your post is garbage. Apple is neither "Good" or "Bad". Neither is MS, but MS has a track record of doing nefarious shit, and Apple not so much. Apple is out to make money just like any other company. I don't care if you criticize, but don't bring something stupid to the table that has been pretty much discounted. Maybe I should rephrase my previous statement, friend. Your opinion is retarded.

I have a 2.8 GHz Aluminum 24". I applied the new patch this morning (9/14) and since then my machine has been crashing constantly. Basically what I see is that the screen stops updating, but I can still move the mouse cursor around. If music is playing in the background, I can still hear it. The machine doesn't respond to the keyboard or to the key combination for force quit. I've been on the phone for about 2 hours with apple support and we've done 3 disk repairs (no errors found). We've also safe booted (multiple times), and created a new empty account. In all those cases, the machine crashses the same way in under 5 min min of use (often under 1 min). I had a PC with similar symptoms about 2 years ago. In that case, it turned out to be a bug in NVIDIA video drivers. This is feeling eerily similar...

They also had me disable & delete all startup items & move all my fonts (not very many) out of the ~/Library/fonts to the desktop, but nothing is helping.

Is this only for the newest iMacs? I just used the software update and it claims I am up to date, although the last update I had was a minor one for Quicktime earlier this week...

The thing that makes me laugh are all of the after I applied update X, A B C started happening. When update X loaded nothing at all in those areas.

That iMovie update made Safari and 3 party product X beach ball and crash all the time.

The video update is not giving me audio problems

Repair permissions and reboot. And when it says it is optimizing the system do not touch it because it is actually optimizing the system.

@15 You're retarded. MS issues updates, and bug fixes ALL THE TIME. And at least Apple gives you the option to load the update instead of just updating your machine when you're not looking. Do you even read the news?

Just because one jackass writes a story comparing Apple to MS, you have to come out like it was your idea? BTW that opinion was pretty handily rebuffed over at Macworld. Apple innovates, and drives others to do the same MS just forces you to adopt their way of thinking, and calls it innovative.

i had the same problems... first the artefacts, then my iMac totally froze during th first reboot. Then after testing to see if the update included a fix for why my audio interface won´t work when connected directly to the FW port, the screen went black and another reboot was due.
