The iPhone Dev Team has released a simple-to-use GUI tool that allows you to unlock your iPhone for use with any SIM. The tool, which is based on their previous command-line work, provides one-touch speedy unlocking. This is a big improvement on the first generation release. It no longer requires you to use special files or to dump nor data.
You can download your copy from the DevTeam website, as a PXL package or, soon, from Installer.app. "Wheat" is the guy responsible for those amazing graphics.
Find out more at the #iphone channel at irc.osx86.hu. Remember, this is early software and unstable. If risk isn't your thing, you'll probably want to wait a few days or weeks for things to stabilize.
Update: After reports of failed unlocks, Sam has updated the version to fix a timing issue. Current version is now 1.0.1, which solves the timing issue.
Update 2: I know of a youtube hack and have heard third-hand of a Visual Voicemail hack. Will post when I have details.

Has anyone used this app to unlock their iPhone? The Dev team forums are a mess since this app was released, with a few threads indicating that it should not be used and has Bricked a few iPhones.
Seems a bit scary.

Erica, will this work with a brand new unopened 4GB iPhone? I live in Costa Rica and have one coming to me via a friend. If I need something else to activate it first can you point me in the right direction? Thanks for all your hard work on this project. Those of us outside of the US greatly appreciate it!

@ Sam
It will only work with GSM phones. If I recall correctly, I think Tracfone offers both GSM and CDMA phones.

The work you and other developers put into applications such as this is what makes the Mac community so great. Thanks.
Excellente as Spanish Mr. Burns would say.
Some ideas of additions to the iPhone that I haven't seen written about anywhere; perian for iPhone (so the ipod app will play all video file types that itunes/quicktime can play), the unarchiver for iphone (commandline, perhaps added to MobileFinder one day).

@ Sam again
I just checked Tracfone's rates...They suck compared to T-Mobile ToGo. Tracfone's $99 refill card is 400 minutes. TMO's $100 refill card is 1000 minutes.

Excellent. Now I just need to find a way to import a sealed iPhone into Canada without paying the eBay tax. (not to mention most of the iPhones on eBay are already hardware unlocked and commanding a premium price)

If you have GSM service, then I can't see any reason why this won't work on your Tracfone SIM. So go out and enjoy some iphone goodness.

All prepaid SIMs will work EXCEPT for TracFone and Net10.
These two prepaid SIMs require special phone firmware that allows you to make calls. Unlike most prepaid companies, the tracfone airtime is stored on the phone, not in a system at the MVNO's end. Without the special firmware you are not going to be able to use Tracfone.
