You hardly have a moment to catch your breath here on the iTunes update desk (cue teletype sound effects); 7.4.2 has just arrived in the hopper. What's new? Well, believe it or not, bug fixes -- and a fix for issues when creating ringtones from iTunes Plus (EMI, high-quality DRMless) tracks. Note this warning from reader Patrick: "Download a copy of 7.4.1 while you still can from Apple! This update even deletes your old ringtones." YMMV.The update weighs in at 38 MB, grab it from Software Update or from here.
Thanks to Mentalsticks, Patrick & Eric for the heads-up.

...anxiously awaiting reports from people who've unlocked their iPhone with anySIM and ran the update.
If the unlock sticks, my next phone with be an iPhone instead of a Curve.

"MakeiPhoneRingtone.app ringtones are gone after updating."
Shocking! Seriously, how many times are people going to find a hack for ringtones, and how many times will Apple issue an iTunes update to patch it?
Looking forward to iTunes version 7.999.

Given how the unlock relies upon a buffer overflow, I think it's a pretty sure thing that Apple is going to break the unlocks. It just needs a iPhone update (NOT iTunes).
Given how the latest 7.4.2 iTunes is being classified by some as a "License Enforcement Release" (no more free ringtones, except for possibly ones created by itoner), my guess is that the next firmware update is going to break all of the current unlocking mechanisms.

Yes, all your previous illegitimate ringtones no longer work after the update, even if they were previously added. Hopefully there will be a fix soon, I'll stick with 7.4.1 until then. If anyone needs the 7.4.1 DMG, just ask me to upload it.

Hi
iTunes purchased items that showed up as "Ringtone-Able" in .1, now do not show that way in .2

If you have mobile Finder, you find your previously sync'd ringtones in itunes_control and move them back to ringtones and they will still work.

How does this affect ring-tones made with Atomic Parsley?

I don't understand why all the fuss about ringtones when I can take any MP3 or AAC or WMA on my Sony Ericsson and make it a ringtone with no hacks or glitches. It's quite wrong of Apple to make this impossible on the iPhone.

I'm still using iTunes 7.3.2.. Really unless there's an actual update that has a worthwhile feature.. I won't bother updating it. iPhone firmware as well. They both work perfectly fine for me as they are!

Everyone, the atomic parsley metadata trick still works. The new/latest twist is that you have to re-rename your ringtone extension to .m4r. Kudos to "shadowfax" on MacRumors' forum for this info.

@Gwion:
I think the difference is that Apple runs the most successful digital music download store on the planet, so they need to keep on the right side of the recording industry, and can't be seen to be 'allowing' the free copying of just any music for use as ringtones.
Sony Ericsson doesn't have such links with the music industry (apart from Sony), so it's got less to lose if their phones potentially allow people to use music from any source (legitimate or not) on their phones.
Also, as Apple is in the business of selling music, it stands to reason they'd want to get in on some of the highly lucrative ringtone market.
I'm not saying I agree with it, but I can kind of understand why...

I was playing a few days ago and purchased a song on iTunes (7.4.1) and also purchased the option to make it a ringtone. It worked as advertised, synced with my iPhone (1.0.2). It was almost fun! However, updating to iTunes 7.4.2 has erased my PURCHASED RINGTONE! It's gone from both iTunes and iPhone. This makes me very happy ;) I'm starting to question Appple and all this iTunes BS.

@JoolsG4, I find it amusing that we can see Apple's motivation behind selling ringtones because they just want to make money and that's how business works. If it were MicroSoft they'd be hanging from the cross already.

FWIW, i was talking to Apple tonight and ACare said they were having trouble with the ringtone service in general. My .1 ringtone indicator (bell) has disappeared for any songs, post .2
This might also be playing a role in things
