iPhone update to add TV out?

Astute TUAW reader Matt Nelson noticed something in Engadget's O2 iPhone hands on gallery that seem to portend some new features coming down the pike for us iPhone users. You may recall that Apple listed some TV out cables as being iPhone compatible, and then quickly fixed that 'error.' If you take a look at the shot above you'll see the O2 iPhone, which is running an unreleased version of the iPhone software, has a new 'TV Out' setting section. Looks like you'll be able to buy some iPhone ready video cables soon enough.

Pointless feature for a phone, better for ipod touch - oh wait, i forgot - they want that device to fail.

Re: yacoub
How is this a pointless feature for the iPhone?
Both devices would benefit equally from such a option.
Think before you type.

Could they just release the firmware already?!?
Oh...and include Flash, too.
And good Exchange support...
And iChat...

Don't forget to add 802.1X PEAP and LEAP authentication to Wi-Fi!
(OS X supports it... why can't the iPhone? :( )

Scott, thanks for recognizing me for the tip! I've tipped before, but never received the first and last name treatment.
Carl (1),
The iPhone is running firmware version 1.1.1. See the corresponding engadget article - http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/18/hands-on-with-the-o2-iphone
yacoub (2),
First, according to apple, the iPhone = best iPod ever. Why would they not give this feature to the nano, classic, and touch, but not the iPhone?
Second, I am really excited about this capability. I sold my apple TV to get the iPhone (a "compromise" between my wife and I) knowing that I would give up watching content from my iTunes library so easily. Now, I can just dock my iPhone and watch, view, or listen to whatever.
Third, stop trolling.
Along with this new feature, the new firmware includes a few more treats: mobile iTunes store (of course), assigning an action to a double-click-home button (like access the iPod controls), and closed captioning to add a few. I'm glad Apple is doing what they said they would - update the iPhone with new features.

Did anyone notice that the iPhone next to it is on the TMobile network? Is this news to everyone but me?

Here's to hoping those iphone video cables are really just standard camcorder cables with a switched "white" and "yellow" connector!

They're going about this wrong: The iPhone needs to focus on being a smartphone. The iPod touch is the media device. Now they're shoving all this extraneous stuff into the iPhone (at the expense of the iPod touch, by the way) and bloating it all out into a convoluted multi-device.

You forgot the most exciting picture! Double-click the home button can go straight to favorites.

Also it was nice of Jobs to announce the iPod touch is "training wheels for the iPhone". Way to make it clear you don't give a crap about the device or supporting it.

Looks like they've updated a couple of the home icons. The calculator sports the same icon as the iTouch. The weather icon now says 23 degrees instead of 73 degrees...

I was playing around with an iPod Touch at an apple store yesterday and it had the same TV Out option. I do not remember the firmware version number.

@16:
I think that's the point of the article: the iPod touch has the ability to export video through the dock connector, but the iPhone does not have that feature yet. Apple's website initially indicated that both the iPod touch and the iPhone had this feature, but then changed their copy to exclude the iPhone. Now, it looks like that feature will be added to the iPhone in soon-to-be-released firmware update.
Anyway - that summary aside - I'd love to see this come to the iPhone. I've got some TV shows that I'd love to watch with my wife but it's hard to do that with both of us sitting close to the phone in my hand or on the desk. TV out would totally fix this.

@10:
If you read the Engadget post, you'll find that the T-Mobile iPhone is an unlocked iPhone (i.e, one owned by an Engadget writer who unlocked it with a third-party unlocking tool) running on the British T-Mobile network.

when the new component and composite cables showed up in the Apple store they showed the iPhone as compatible - I checked again today and they have removed the iPhone icon.
Really hoping that the iPhone will get TV-out
