The Guardian newspaper seems to have its sources right, as today sees Steve in Germany to announce the availability of the iPhone there....

Why do Germans have to pay damn 553 bucks for the thing!!!
I'm from The Netherlands, but no way I'm gonna buy an iPhone in Germany. Not, unless Apple stops misusing the strong Euro at the moment..
Bollocks.
I think this MP3-File is interesting. In Berlin Jobs is talking about native 3rd-party apps. (15''25')

Looks like the new iPhone v1.1 update may have a new game icon also. There's new icon on the the springboard called "Agriff" which means attack or invasion in german.

"at least some European operators are ensuring the data technology is commonplace before offering the iPhone"
actually, this data technology was commonplace a while ago and now they must reinstall it just for this handset? With a 3G model coming in 2008 I wonder how many will go after it in November.
Quote from the full announcement:
By the end of 2007, T-Mobile will be the only network operator in Germany to offer EDGE throughout its entire GSM network. EDGE accelerates the mobile data transfer rate to over 220 Kilobits per second, which makes it almost four times as fast as ISDN in fixed-line networks. With EDGE, the German market leader offers its customers 100 percent broadband â anywhere and at any time. With 20,000 HotSpots worldwide, T-Mobile is the biggest Wi-Fi provider in the world. Of those HotSpots, 8,600 are in Germany, where HotSpot users can achieve download speeds of up to 11 megabytes per second.
These guys should be in politics:
1) EDGE at 22kbs! wow, I know AT&T are useless but I get ~80kbs.
2) When I had ISDN 12 years ago it ran at 128kbps or dual channel at 256kbps so I'm not sure how they're doing the comparison calculation.
3) EVERYONE ELSE HAS MOVED TO 3G!!!!!!!! That's why they'll be the only one with full EDGE coverage.
Good grief!
Damn, no one has mentioned italy yet....

Had they used a single carrier for all of Europe the EU would certainly be looking into antitrust investigation.
@ wt:
just about 190 countries later...
...and Orange for France tomorrow, right?
