Wired's Easy-Peasy iPhone Lockdown Checklist

Apple's hardly been on the charm offensive recently, what with the hard-hitting press release, clarifications from Phill Schiller, and the lockdown of the iPhone 1.1.1 update. So if you're wondering what on earth all the fuss is within the iPhone hacking community, then the folks at Wired have put together a brilliant at-a-glance checklist (based on an original feature list at 9to5mac.com) of all the 'improvements' iPhone software v1.1.1 offers over hacked version v1.0.2 and why folks are up in arms.

Of course, the punchline is too good to spoil, so you'll need to click 'Read' below to view the check-list.

WHO IS IN CHARGE HERE? Look

WHO IS IN CHARGE HERE?
Look I am not sure who is right on any of these arguments. There is one basic principal in life, those that try and risk and those that do not and stay safe.
Understand that Apple is not a vindictive company but one that is trying to ensure the security of its "property". We may have plunked down our $600, 90 days in the hopes that we would be part of the greatest revolution in technology , and you know what we are part of it no matter what side of the fence we are on, hacker or not.
Look I can say with up most certainty that when I tried the "unlocking" 2 weeks ago it was flawless, the Install.app is a thing of beauty. But like many folks out there we are not sure we made the right choice. I felt like I needed to see if it was worth all the hipe and you know what it is. The 3rd parties are super cool and I support that community to the fullest. I guess I am ready to get back in line and bring my investment back in line.
I have heard of people able to hear their phones still receiving email and phone calls. This to me is Apple messing with us to the fullest. There has to be a "backroom" fix for the bricking. Apple has all the cards right now until the Dev team figures it out and they will I am sure. But for now Apple is playing with us.
If the phone were a 100% brick. It would never start up and be lifeless, you know like a brick. I guess what we are experiencing is a "soft brick".
Now I have a masters in IC design and it looks as if the engineers at Apple are aiming for the checksum on baseband modem and altering the IMEI but the odd thing about this is that the iPhone Sim Free folks have been getting through the upgrade with out a hitch. Granted the phone is relocked but not bricked. And when I say 'bricked" i mean bricked. This may restart but you are unable to go back to the older firmware or anything else except read the screen.
The iUnLock and AnySim app is the one that is taking the majority of the bricking. So there must be a difference in the 2 unlock packages that are flashing the baseband. If someone on the Dev Team would take a look at what is happening there maybe we could get a fix for the bricking.
Also has anyone tried using the iPhoneSimFree app to write over the AnySim/iUnlock app baseband flashing and then try the 1.1.1 upgrade. I know it sounds a little crazy but it might work.
Remember we are dealing with a company that did not take into account GoPhone sims when they applied this update either.
I am not getting a good feeling from the Dev Team that they are closer to getting the "switch-backers" a relock solution but maybe they will and so much the better.
So if you all what to keep bashing each other go right ahead more power too you. The rest of us what to see what happens next.

Quote from the link:

"There's a lot a computer can do beyond make phone calls and surf the web, and chaining this little powerhouse down is a damned shame of PSP-like proportions."

Yeah verily.

New Robert Heinlein joke:

The iPhone is a supercomputer running a locked-downed version of Vista built to Corporate specifications.

Call it: "Hello I'm an iPhone" and this mac ad works perfectly here:

I'm glad that TUAW covers iPhone news pretty extensively. I don't have time to scour the internet for every update or interesting article about the iPhone or other Apple products, so I'm pleased to find many of them referenced here.

I know it won't stop people from complaining, but here is their feed sans iPhone coverage:

Hmmm... and here I thought it was The Unoffical APPLE Weblog.... who makes the iPhone again???

I say Hats Off and thank you TUAW for keeping up with all things Apple and keeping us informed!

That being said, that Wired post was funny. Sad, but funny.

I wish somebody would make a phone that does *everythng* the iPhone doesn't but *nothing* that the iPhone does.

I know which one I'd choose: same one I already did.

Nerds: throwing out the best designed phone ever over NES emulation...
