Breaking: Reports of 1.1.1-to-1.0.2 iPhone downgrades trickling in

Remember that bit where I said upgrading from 1.1.1 to 1.0.2 was a one-way trip? Looks like I spoke prematurely. Tonight, reports are trickling in about successful 1.1.1-to-1.0.2 iPhone firmware downgrades using this method described at the "iPhone Devteam" wiki, which relies on a combination of firmware-fu and the INDependence software. TUAW reader skwasha tipped us off to an ongoing conversation at the hackint0sh forums that got the ball rolling on this.
I have not yet been able to confirm this downgrade so let us know in the comments if the method worked for you or not.
Update: After downgrading your iPhone will most likely not work as a phone. But you'll be able to use it with third party apps and WiFi. Developing.
Update 2: More detailed instructions here at Nate True's blog.
Update 3: This method is now called "pulling a kmac" after the original poster who figured this out.
Update 4: If you're getting the "Please Connect to iTunes" thing, you'll need to set some environmental variables. You can do this with either iBrickr/iphoneinterface or with iPHUC. Instructions for both at Nate's blog.

Wow that's quite an amazing development. I'm still glad I managed to get an apple genius to exchange my previously unlocked brick for a new phone though...

So far after 3 tries not good.
After the restore it errors and wants to install 1.1.1.

This is such a bad direction to take. I realize people want their apps, but I feel like the effort expended on that could be so much better used on cracking the latest firmware.

Could we get a feed that drops the iPhone hacking posts?

Sigh... I was hoping that iPhone hacking didn't need to become like the PSP homebrew scene.

Uros, I was just thinking the same thing.
Personally, I think people should just deal with the device as it is offered. If they don't offer the device you want, then find another device. It seems silly to continually play this game with a big company when what you're really saying is that you don't like the software or service they offered you in the first place.
And Good Grief-- I concur. I'm sort of sick of reading about iPhone hacking. It's dull, and I can see the pattern emerging already: "iPhone hacked", followed by "Apple breaks hack" followed by "iPhone hacked again" and so on. I watched this with the PSP, and I'd rather not see an Apple product's trip into the "homebrew" underworld.

Oh crap. I am being prompted to install 1.1.1. ... So how do you 'fool' iTunes to think that 1.0.2. is the latest and most up-to-date iPhone software? I just want my custom ringtones back. I don't need to switch carriers or anything exotic.

I wouldn't try this unless your iphone wasn't working at all.
Please dev team help, and just work on the new installer.app for 1.1.1

I've verified that you can in fact downgrade from 1.1.1 to 1.0.2 using this method. If you're an ATT user your phone will work just fine. So those of you that miss your 3rd Party apps and don't care so much about the upgrades, go nuts - this will work.
I've also verified that you can upgrade BACK to 1.1.1.

I'm gonna go for it.
I much rather have all those cool 3rd party apps than that lame ass Wifi Music Store.

One other note, you'll need to run Apptapp TWICE in order to get installer.app back on - it errors the first time, but the second time it gets it on there.

Having 3rd Party apps is a big deal: it makes this into a unix box - a fully functional computer!
So having a method that everyone can install 102 is huge, and a huge effort is being made at craking open 111 but it may be awhile and this is the only solution for the moment

Great job! I know that many readers of this site are tired of these posting but I think it is super cool that you guys are getting it done and rolled back.
Also, once Apple finds out that everyone is grabbing copies of 1.0.2 firmware, they will surely pull the link. So someone should host the file somewhere for download.

And one more thing. There is a copy of this firmware on all of the OSX machines inside of the user/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates/iPhone1,1_1.0.2_1C28_Restore.ipsw
Not sure where this file is on the Windows boxes.
Good luck everyone!

I love how people are willing possibly break their precious phones for Justin Timberlake ringtones — unless you prefer Nick Carter, of course.

Brian.
That is SO true.
Someone must host 1.0.2
This is great.
For anybody who is complaining about all the unlocking news, please keep it to yourselves. You need to keep in mind that many people (myself included) are outside of the continental US, and we are Apple fans just like you.
So this kind of information allows us to not get reamed for iPhones on craigslist or many other sources for our apple fetishes.
Don't be so selfish with your iPhone enjoyment.
Erica, I hope you keep doing great work. You are becoming an international hero.
Cheers

@6: sometimes if something else will come easier, you do that easier thing for now. Remember, there are still thousands of phones that are not working at all because of this firmware upgrade.
The downgrade gives them hope to have a working phone again.
@7: no way. the less blogs about the updates the better. Apple is watching everything everyone does.
@9: I was thinking the same thing but really unless a better device comes out we have no choice. The iPhone is the ONLY device of its kind. What I recommend is that everyone who loves the 3rd party apps write a well written letter to Apple telling them so.
Online petitions are a waste of time, so don't even think about it, just write a well-worded letter. No flames, no insults. Keep it intelligent, interesting and insightful. Make it a letter Apple will want to read. Address it to Steve Jobs, address it to the marketing guy.
If it's interesting someone will read it. If they receive a ton of letters it might sink in to their heads that having the iPhone open is not a bad thing.
