Revisiting iPhone Disk: MacFUSE system for iPhone and iPod touch

I first tried out iPhoneDisk a few months ago. It implements MacFuse for the iPhone and was, at the time I tested it, flaky and incompletely implemented. Now that Apple has shut down all the better ways to interact with your iPhone, I decided to start revisiting early and abandoned efforts to see whether they showed promise with the new 1.1.1 updates. What I found was this: iPhoneDisk remains as flaky and incomplete as ever but it does work with both the iPod touch and iPhone. You can use it to transfer files to and from your Media folder directly in the Finder.

Because iPhoneDisk is open source, it provides the perfect opportunity for coders to get involved, expand and debug the project. SSHFS made it easy to put your iPhone files onto your desktop but now that 1.1.1 killed ssh access, maybe it's time to go back and give iPhoneDisk another look.

I'm not sure what she means by flaky but this is about as interesting as using iPhuc to go into 1.1.1, but for 1.0.2 it sounds great, if it wasn't flaky.

@ what mrs. sadun means by flaky, umm.. if ANYONE is getting a kernel panic from installing this i say STAY FAR FAR AWAY.

If you can use this to access the filesystem of the ipod touch/iphone than why can't you use this to load apps and other software like installer.app? Does it restrict it to specific folders? Even so, why is file transfer working and can that be exploited to get full access? I guess I should read more, I'm sure this is being looked at...

This apps works great for me and I really appreciate it.

The only gotcha I've noticed (and I would not call this flaky) is that you need to quit iTunes before you attempt to spin up your iPhone disk. I'd call that By Design.

I thought kernel panics were a feature? No, just kidding... I actually am just curious because I'm at work and I can't try it out until I get home.

The comments have provided some good insight; I may skip this one until the next release.

7: I've read through all your comments posted on TUAW and wasn't albe to find anything going beyond your post here. Would you be so kind and explain why exactly Erica Sadun, one of the planet's worst paid bloggers, screwed up third party apps?

Maybe she means flaky and incomplete as in caused a kernel panic on my MBP immediately after installing it.

Erica apparently isn't too good about revealing connections in her articles. I'm one of the co-authors of the open source project she's slamming. Since she didn't state what was incomplete and flaky maybe that connection is what has motivated this posting?

I thought TUAW had better editorial standards than this.

I request the posting be altered to include some facts behind her assertions or an editorial note about the connection to myself and my personal opinion that Erica Sadun is partly responsible for causing the suspension of 3rd party application access on the iPhone.

Erica, can you define what you mean by "flaky and incomplete"?
