iPhone developer NerveGas has updated his BSD subsystem in preparation for the new iPhone jailbreak. This new release offers tighter code fixes ("less cruft"), a few additions and a few omissions of less useful items. He also removed libarmfp dependencies. In other words, this release brings iPhone users closer to the standard BSD world.
Among other changes, NerveGas has rebuilt the kext tools, added reboot, mknod, a working chown and vmstat. Other new items include chflags, lsvfs, mkfifo (and friends), tee, renice, and cap_mkdb. You might notice one big missing item: minicom. NerveGas will be releasing minicom as a separate package. NerveGas has also updated ssh.

Will iphone apps run natively on the ipod touch, or will they need to be recompiled? I don't think this question has been answered yet.

Erica! you're killing me, in a good way. I'm as anxious for 1.1.1 and the newer jailbreaks/applications as I was for the initial iPhone (which I stood in line for opening day - LOL).
All you naysayers bitching about the updates here - just don't read them, or try out some of the apps and see how much more capable and cool your stock iPhone can become with some overlooked-by-Apple applications added to it.

Could somebody explain if it is possible to activate a 1.1.1 iPhone?
I'm using a TurboSim ... so activation is all I should need for 1.1.1, right?

I have to say, many the minor and very much overly nerdy posts that Erica posts from time to time leave me quite confused. She really has a pension for letting out her inner geek these days.
That said, I am always glad to see them, because I see it as evidence that we're getting closer to a 1.1.1 jailbreak, and moreover I'm sure there are plenty here that DO understand and some that might even have a solution or helpful tidbit of info for her in response to her overly verbose updates.
Cheers Erica and the iPhone/iTouch DevTeam and to all the naysayers that seem to always find the time to post a comment on these updates that they're "tired of reading about hacking the iPhone" - seriously, is someone MAKING you read them? There are MANY bloggers on TUAW, Erica is obviously mostly focused on the iPhone hacking process but you are NOT losing out on other Apple news because of it, so just skip the posts you don't want to read and get over yourselves.

I read with the current jailbreak 1.1.1 you can activated using a 3er party software, however since the GSM modem was upgraded with 1.1.1, i don;t think the turbo sim will work. and so far there is no way to re-flash the modem firmware to the old version.
Short answer..NO "activation" is not all you need, your turbo SIM will ave to be re-programed to work with he new modem firmware - all this is in theory since I haven't test it

@#8 NO deets yet because it's not ready yet and may still brick iPhones.
I hang out in iRC and I'll be damned if I can figure out what's going on from the traffic there. Erica's Updates are up-to-the-SECOND on what's happening, and very welcome at that.
I've NEVER seen so much public info on an ongoing hack, and in a coherent manner too. Erica is doing a GREAT JOB!

Does this (kext tools) mean that we are a few steps closer to getting a mount_nfs type binary working? Because I still dream of having a 100 GB iPhone (after mounting a specifically designed volume over wifi and creating a symlink so the iPod thinks it is reading the Media folder when in fact it's reading a Media folder on my network drive)... I have the vision, someone just needs to implement it :)
Back to med school.. ;)

If you're not interested in hacked iPhones, TUAW is not so fun anymore. All the good stuff (for me, that is) is hidden between these posts I don't understand or even care about. But maybe that just means I should find another Apple-news&rumours site. Any suggestions?

screw med school, u should be studying software development, then u CAN bring your dreams to reality.

Put up or shut up (or leave), the choice is yours. Try Yahoo pipes, to filter said "iPhone" stories from the Tuaw RSS. Have you heard of it?

sorry, it's true. with the addition of all these bloggers, tuaw is overrun with a lack of quality control.
if i have to read another post from sadun about how many hours she spent last night not accomplishing anything on an unreleased project, i'm going to barf. is there not a more appropriate place to take this? are 500 half-assed iphone "hacking" posts per day really necessary?
as i mentioned in another comment, i'm sure this new sensationalistic direction of rebelling against the evil apple overlords is getting a few hits, but come ON...
...i haven't even mentioned the general irresponsibility and immaturity of the material.

Here's what I feel is a peaceful solution: Has Erica considered setting up a separate blog for iPhone hacking?

@dk: Is Erica holding a gun to your head and telling you that you're going to read and enjoy every post she makes on TUAW?
What? She isn't? You're not joking, right?
THEN WHAT THE F@#@ IS YOUR PROBLEM?!?
If you don't like a post on TUAW, then don't read it. If reading another story about iPhone hacking will drive you insane, go to Yahoo Pipes and make an iPhone-hacking-less RSS feed and read that. But many of us enjoy Erica's updates on the jailbreak situation, and we'd rather not hear your drivel on every post about how TUAW is going straight into the toilet.

I, for one, support you Erica. The iPhone is an Apple product and NEWS about what people are doing with it is what this site does. I have no interest in George Harrison so I didn't read that story.....
