Want to jailbreak your 1.1.1 iPhone so you can access all its files and install third party apps? Don't want to wait for Niacin's patch to leave beta? Here's a published method direct from the team. It may look similar to the iPhone Alley hack that is making the rounds but this isn't a derivative or leaked guide. This hack provides jailbreak, activation, and third party applications. The iPhone Alley hack is a actually copy of an early team method that someone leaked.
So does that mean this will be more reliable or a better version? Not necessarily. However, the guys have been working hard on this for quite some time and they are pretty confident about their method.
The hack applies only to the iPhone at this time and is not meant for iPhones with modified basebands. An iPod touch jailbreak will be published at a later date. For the actual hack procedure, check out this zip file (mirror here). You'll find detailed instructions on:
- Downgrading to 1.0.2 (if necessary)
- Preparing the iPhone for a jailbroken update
- Performing a software update, leaving you with a jailbroken v1.1.1
- Forcing v1.1.1 to mount read-write so you can access it
- Installing SSH and BSD world
- Activating with a Non-ATT SIM
- Patching SpringBoard to allow third-party applications
- Clean-up

I don't care about iPhone. I want to jailbreak iPod touch.
(Oh, and check your grammar there. I have no idea what the sentence "The iPhone Alley hack is a actually copy of an early team method that someone leaked" means).

"Activating with a Non-ATT SIM"
This doesnt mean that it unlocks the phone also, does it?

I must admit I'm now lost with all these iPhone hacking groups. We have, from what I can count today:
1.) Niacin -- since this isn't his jailbreak
2.) iPhone Alley
3.) iPhone Dev Team
4.) iPhone Dev Team 'Elite'
Now I assume the iPhone Dev Team jailbreak is basically the same Niacin's based on the story.... while it also sounds like the iPDT (iPhone Dev Team) is treating the iPhone Alley jailbreak like a heaping pile of donkey excrement... similer to the 'Elit'e view of the original 1.0.x jailbreak.
Just let me know when I can upgrade my unlocked 1.0.2 t-mobile iPhone. Until then... I just don't know what your talking about.

yeah I agree, i think that %95 of the people only care about have an iphone v. 1.1.1 that is unlocked, activation is really only 1/2 the battle.

i hate the new tuaw background.
such a low res looking pic. i miss the blue.
i was thinking today how nice it is to see the blue
load before the page loads . . so mac like. now you
have this new time machine look that you can barely
tell looks like time machine or mac like. the borders
that show are just not obvious mac like.
i know you guys are leopard happy, and so am i!
but come on, get creative!!

Thank´s guys! You have really done a great job. Is it a big step from here to be able to make calls with a non AT&T simcard?

I can't find any mention of this on the Dev Team wiki. How can we be sure this even is from the dev team, besides the fact that you have ties to them, Erica?
How is it a public iPhone 1.1.1 Jailbreak if it's not on the dev team wiki, no link to a forum thread or anything? It's just links to some random zip file.
No offence, but I'd like to see something backing this up a little bit more.

I have been wondering...How many people that have a 1.1.1 bricked iPhone have canceled their ATT plan? maybe a good survey for you guys to run. I know I am going to cancel with ATT, early termination fee ends up being cheaper then paying out the remaining 2 years of my contract with no cell service.

I thought it was a background TIFF trying to exploit my safari on the iPhone, causing a buffer overflow then running rogue code, like setting all of my contacts web site addresses to: tuaw.com.

So any new information on when the relock tool will be available? You didn't mention it again after announcing its supposed release date some weeks ago.

Wow. Good going Dev Team! I was hesitant to use the iPhone Alley method, it seemed that there were a good number of questions unanswered, where the method assumed you knew what they meant in several contexts. After reading through the readme, I am confident to get this going.
Cheers, and thanks again for the magic!
