iPhone Elite Team publishes 'unbrick' procedure
Suppose you took your iPhone, running 1.0.2 firmware, and unlocked it using anySIM for use on alternate GSM networks. Then suppose -- against the advice of Apple, reliable sources, and men in the streets waving signs saying "The End Is Near" -- you tried to upgrade said phone to the 1.1.1 firmware. Now you have an iBrick, and you wish like anything you could take it back, and return to a happy place... but you can't, unless you have about $100 for the iPhoneSIMFree paid unlock. Well, now, maybe you can.The self-styled iPhone Elite Team has published 19-step directions for rolling back from 1.1.1 to the original 1.0.2 firmware and an unlocked state. Not for the faint of heart (one step says "get the secpack 4.0... some people have it, I have no idea how they got it but it's needed") but some commenters there indicate that the process has worked for them. Note that unlike iPhoneSIMFree, this will probably not allow you to roll forward to the 1.1.1 firmware.
As with every iPhone hack, be aware that you will void every warranty your iPhone ever had, and Apple will burn all your LPs and talk smack about you to its girlfriends. Of course, if you need this procedure, you already know that.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in

Some of you guys need to stop bitching about when this stuff is posted, and what is posted. They post what they find, when they find it. That is good enough, if you dont like it, im sure you wont hurt their feelings by leaving, but quit being stupid and acting like an idiot about it. You have a problem, send them a respectful e-mail like a responsible adult, instead of whining like script kiddies on 4chan.

thanks for taking the time to address this..
i'll look more closely at Pipes. I've been using Newsgator to create custom feeds for a while now, but it doesn't have the same filtering capability as Pipes
point taken (re: spinning off a iphone hacking blog)
i'll apologize to everyone for being so bitchy. I've had terrible week.. in nearly every facet of my life.
here's to looking fwd a good (better) w/e

"The issue, I believe, is not with having RELEVANT iPhone posts, but in having certain factions hijack this blog for their own 15 minutes of fame -- I think it's pretty telling that it is *you* who posted the iPhone "Elite" Team unbricking news, and not Erica."
You're incorrect. I just got there faster. (cf. my earlier notes about "why haven't you posted this yet, Engadget had it in the middle of the night!")
Reading the tea leaves on who posts what is not going to get you any solid data -- too much noise, too many contingencies. Sorry!
"she most likely would not have readily reported on what you just did (again, my opinion, and assumption)."
Your assumption, as noted, is incorrect. You are of course entitled to your opinion, as am I, and as is Erica.
One of the most dangerous things to do in any form of online communication (blog post, email, etc.) is to assume you know the other person's motivations and inner drives. The best way to start a flame war is to say "Clearly you don't care about X, because if you did you would never say/do Y." This what my wife refers to as the e-lotov cocktail. It's gonna cause problems. :-)
"The situation, though, where I think a lot of people got pissed off, is the article on the flaming PowerBook that Apple replaced with a MacBook for the user - which Erica reported on and promptly used as a soap-boax for some really nasty passive-agressive negativity"
Well, I'd argue that people have been on Erica's case for a lot, LOT longer than that post.
I didn't read the Stockholm Syndrome reference that way, although I can see how one might. If you read the linked article, it's hard not to wonder how on earth a man who's bed was nearly incinerated (with him in it) comes out feeling so happy about Apple -- other blogs, including Fake Steve, Ars, and Engadget, asked basically the same question.
Again, I have to emphasize that it is the projection of motive, attitude and/or hidden agenda onto the poster that triggers this conflict. You see a post and presume the writer's motives, which may or may not be true.
"Anyway, I am noticing that more diversity in articles seems to pepper the index page, by more diverse contributors, which is a welcome change."
I'm not sure how long your time horizon is, but a diversity of articles isn't a change, that's the way it usually is. If one writer or topic seems dominant, that's because either a) that person is prolific or b) the rest of us are busy/sleeping/etc. I will grant that yesterday was iHack-heavy, but as noted above that is not Erica's fault.
"I do second the opinion of *MANY* at this point, that the iPhone hacking posts should have their own blog, or at least their own separate feed and category."
As noted above, anyone can create their own customized feed via Yahoo Pipes and see only the stories that they care about, to the extent possible. Note that there are individual pages for categories and tags in the format
http://tuaw.com/tags/tag-name-here
http://tuaw.com/category/category-name-here
You are welcome to submit suggestions for reorganizing the blog at http://www.tuaw.com/contact/comments/ which is likely more effective than comments to posts.
thanks!
#21 -- thanks for clarifying Bhamm.
To correct one misconception, TUAW has never provided a custom iPhone-free feed. The feed referenced in
http://www.tuaw.com/2007/06/22/iphone-free-tuaw-feed/
is a Yahoo Pipes metafeed that Erica created as a courtesy. Anyone with a Yahoo account can create any Pipes project they want and filter TUAW content in any fashion they desire (no posts with both "iphone" and "unlock" for example). It's pretty straightforward and once created can be shared with anyone.
I can't speak to the likelihood of a 'spinoff' blog but personally I don't think it is a good idea. iPhone hacking is an ephemeral business, and there will not always be news surrounding it like there is now.
We'll continue to strive for a mix of informative, fun, helpful posts, addressing different levels of technical sophistication. I don't imagine there will be too many days with six iPhone-hacking posts in a row, but if there are, Erica's not to blame -- call the rest of us on the carpet for slacking! :-)
Your comments: What is more tiring (way) than an another iPhone story, is another
diatribe (or ten) from indignant, self-important, a$$holes
complaining about "another iPhone story". For phuks sake, if you
don't want to read the story THEN DON'T! But DON'T clog up the
comments on the story with the same monotonous drivel when the
comments could and should be used for people to comment on the
subject matter. If you are so in love with the sight of your own
words that you actually get a kick out of saying the same thing 20
times over, then start your own blog about how you hate iPhone
hacking news. That way, the rest of us can NOT READ your stories.
Really, we don't deserve you here - you are too good for us. So,
leave. Really.
Oh, and Michael - constantly banning contributors and readers is *not* the answer, either - I strongly suspect you were not behind the recent spate of bannings, though you may want to look into who was behind them.

Despitre Erica painting herself as the Herald of all things iPhone, it appears really that she only suports her home team, the Dev Team - and I suspect that due to the falling out with the slightly better intentioned "Elite Team" (my opinion), she most likely would not have readily reported on what you just did (again, my opinion, and assumption).
The situation, though, where I think a lot of people got pissed off, is the article on the flaming PowerBook that Apple replaced with a MacBook for the user - which Erica reported on and promptly used as a soap-boax for some really nasty passive-agressive negativity - with her frequent links to Stockholm Syndrome to 'explain' why that particular Mac user was so happy with Apple. This was completely uncalled for, and it was an example opf Erica taking her personal beef with Apple (which is also uncalled for) and letting it infest other unrealted articles.
Anyway, I am noticing that more diversity in articles seems to pepper the index page, by more diverse contributors, which is a welcome change. Glad to see that some more rational ears are still around :-)
I do second the opinion of *MANY* at this point, that the iPhone hacking posts should have their own blog, or at least their own separate feed and category.
@Michael Rose
Sorry if my flaming appeared to be directed at you personally.. it wasn't meant that way. And it's not that i don't want to hear /anything/ about the iPhone. A lot of us here are interested.. we'd just like the signal:noise ratio adjusted a bit.
At one point, the iPhone coverage was great. Sure, there was a boat load of it (compared to other topics), but TUAW at least provided a feed for those with NO interest. I'm sure those folks appreciated the gesture. For many of us /with/ an interest in the iPhone, i think we feel we're stuck having to dig through the soap opera that is Erica's hour-by-hour cat/mouse with Apple.. just to glean something useful (to us).
I've hacked my Macs for the last 12 years, and still do. I think iPhone hacking is fine. I think, ultimately, lots of iPhone users will benefit from the efforts of people like Erica. I just don't think the main TUAW feed is the best place to air all of this out. That's what's frustrating a lot of us.
I'd personally like to see either:
1. a spin off the iPhone hacking stuff to another blog.. there's clearly enough news/interest/discussion to warrant it.. or:
2. provide an iPhone feed without all of the iBricking, Jailbraking, iPhone Elite Team, etc. drama. As i mentioned previously, lots of us are interested in the iPhone and would greatly appreciate a way to follow it.. without having to sift through the drama.
Thanks Mike, for asking, and for your attention. I have hope :)
I'm leaving! I'm leaving right now!! For real this time!! It's no use trying to stop me, there's nothing you can do!
I have my hand on the door!
I'm opening the door!
I'm stepping out! Don't even think about calling me back! I've had it with you!
I'm stepping out...I'm closing the door! (door slams shut)
(door opens)
I'm really REALLY leaving now!!"
(door slams shut)
Really guys. Leave gracefully if you're gonna leave.
@15
um.. it's not /my/ Mac based business. I'm just in charge of the servers, databases, network, etc..
i'm also not suggesting that TUAW's loss of /my/ readership is going to 'take down TUAW'. But it is worth reminding the folks who own this site that the loss of one subscriber (me, in this case) is going to cost them many others (my clients and coworkers). A few dozen here/there is going to add up, eventually.
