iPhone jailbreak interface INdependence updated to 1.2.2
We just received word that Independence, the interactive Cocoa jailbreak program for iPhone has been updated to version 1.2.2 and now supports 1.1.1 jailbreaks. The notes on the site say the the activation/jailbreak process is more complicated than it had been previously, presumably due to the infrastructure changes to 1.1.1.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

Please note that if you have used anySIM or other free SIM unlocking solutions (anything except for the iPhoneSimFree solution), and you upgrade to 1.1.1, it will wipe out the SIM unlock and render the phone and text message part of your phone inoperable. Everything else will work though.

I can confirm that it works. I'm using my iPhone with a TurboSim. It's a little more to do, but everything is explained really well. Still, no german menu, but Umlaute at last! Finally I can do this: äääöö! Hähä!
Ok, enough already.
But: for all people using a TSIM, I can definetly recommend to give it a try ... and don't worry!

@TMM You said your TurboSIM working fine.. where did you get your version and which version of TurboSIM? I have seen some from China at www.s-pod.com and wondering if to buy.

I would really, really love to get some good answers here:
I unlocked my iPhone using the Install.app process, which installed (ahem) the Unlock.app app (again, ahem). Is this the same as the anySIM and iUnlock process that they keep referring to in all the new unlock procedures?
Is there a way for me to upgrade to 1.1.1 AND have my T-Mobile SIM card work AND be able to install applications? If yes, please point me in the right direction.

P.S.
I support any and all articles the bloggers wish to post on TUAW, as long as they are somehow related to Apple and their products. Keep up the great work!

Yes ... You should not update now. Wait a little longer. There are tools in the works that will let you update your software unlocked phone ... But they aren't ready yet.
It won't take long ... Just a few more days ... So don't make mistake and don't update to 1.1.1 right now.
Be patient.

Is the iNdependence jailbreak using the TIFF exploit? Also, is anyone that has used this able to install and run: Apollo IM, VNotes, ToDoList, Navizon, Finder, iShare, SendPics, Sketches, and the games?

Here's a link which suggests some compatability. Notwithstanding, I agree that it would be best to forgo the 1.1.1 until absolutely necessary. Additionally, it's reasonable to presume that subsequent update could accompany leopard's release.

iNdependence is Wunderbar
I have been happy using my iPhone in the UK on Vodafone firmware 1.02 unlocked using the HaRRo Method I was waiting for iNdependence_v1.2.2 before I moved to firmware version 1.1.1. iNdependence did everything it said it would and is a wonderful app beautifully written. I then used the ipsf 1.6 to fix / unlock the phone and now I have a UK iPhone still running 3rd party apps and running 1.1.1.
Erica Keep up the great work and all the posts.

is there any chance we'll get the installer.app working with 1.1.1? I just did the 1.1.1 upgrade but now i have no idea how to get apps on the iPhone!

Re: Spanky
You CAN install AppTapp (Installer.app) under 1.1.1 with iNdependence.
The trick is to extract the Installer.app from the AppTapp installation file and manually transfer it to the App folder on the iPhone.
Just use iNdependence to install SSH on the iPhone and then SFTP the app over.
I used Cyberduck for my transfer.

Can I use independence to downgrade to 1.0.2 then just stay there and install with apptapp from there? Or do I need to downgrade, then use independence to upgrade to 1.1.1, then jailbreak again?
I have jailbroke my phone before, then I foolishly upgraded to 1.1.1 and am having upgraders remorse.

@ Tom
You could use apptap to downgrade to 1.0.2. IF you haven't modified your baseband, ie unlocked your phone. I chose using the difficult method that the Devteam created to upgrade to 1.1.1 this weekend. I haven't tried this method, but i'm guessing in theory it automates what the Devteam came out with, without the use of terminal and iPHUC.

Yes aymeric, everything is explained. iNdependence is great and I praise the ground that the lifeless developers walk on. Is it soooo wrong to be just a little selfish and ask for some good old tech hand holding? I want someone one on one tutoring with specific input based on my personal situation.
p.s. I can't pronounce your name...Ahhhmyyyyeeerrriiiicccc

Can I restore my 1.1.1 updated iphone to its original state after applying the jailbreak mentioned here? Essentially recovering it to a state which won't 'brick' it after an update.
Thanks
Edgard

I think I found a method of relocking the baseband - factory reset if you will.
I followed these instructions:
http://iphone.unlock.no/
Download baseband 1.02 files
Use iBrickr to upload the three files to /usr/bin/. From the Terminal application on your phone run the following five commands:
cd /usr/bin
chmod +x bbupdater
launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist
bbupdater -f 314.fls -e 314.eep
launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist
This allow the following:
1) If you are on 1.02 - you can do a factory reset - and return back to apple factory standard phone
2) Use the IPSF 1.6 to unlock and move up to 1.1.1
3) NOT SURE but maybe unbrick the iphone from a down grade
Please Erica - check it out and would love your feedback
Thanks for all your efforts
