iToner 1.0.3 works with iPhone 1.1.1
The iToner saga continues. As you might recall, iToner (which allows you to create ringtones for your iPhone using any non-DRMed AAC or MP3 files) no longer worked with the iPhone 1.1.1 firmware. All seemed lost, but those crafty folks at Ambrosia figured out a way to get iToner working as a beta. The beta has now been released as a full fledged update.iToner 1.0.3 costs $15 and requires OS x 10.4.10 or higher and an iPhone.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

I would rather do it manually than use even a free program to make my ringtones. Is that possible yet? haven't been following this saga as well as I should have. It got kinda confusing after the whole Dev team vs Elite team split. Can't we all get along? We share a common enemy here. And yes, in this case, Apple is the enemy. Which is really quite unfortunate, but it's true.

i'm with pete (#1) -- it loads 'em, but they don't play, or at least, they don't make any sound.

What don't I get? I have 1.0.2, but I just scp my mp3:s to /Library/Ringtones and they work without any conversion or tweaking for ringtones, alarm signals...

Try converting the file to AAC format. MP3 file doesn't work for me either, but AAC does.

From this post at Ambrosia's site:

"From my experience, it appears that you have to sync two at a time. I tried three and they didn't work. I tried four and it did work. Maybe you have to sync an even number of ringtones."

wild -- the first time i used it, i DID use an AAC file, and it didn't work. then i converted that file to an MP3, and that didn't work, either. i even tried other MP3 ringer files i had around, and none of them worked. now, i just rebooter iToner, went back to the AAC file i originally tried, and now it works fine.

update to my post (#11):
for the record, this time i actually DID use two sound files at the same time, and that's when it worked. all the previous times, i was only using one sound file at a time, different formats, but none of them worked.

hmm...only half of them play. All are m4a.
Anywho, congrats to Ambrosia for doing this, you guys rock!

What happens with the next iPhone firmware update? Will that render ringtones generated by iToner useless?

Now that the kabuki over 3rd party apps is over, will Apple get reasonable on ringtones? Do I have to pay and pay to use my own recordings as ringtones on the iPhone?

Update to my post (#8)
That's so weird...I couldn't get just the one file to work so I duplicated it, renamed and then synced both files. Just one of the two work and if I remove the extra file the one that worked doesn't anymore. Weird...

Had the same issues as everyone else, could get the files onto the phone but no sound from them. I duplicated the file, added both, tested both on the phone and they worked fine. Deleted the duplicate and it still works. I applaud Ambrosia for their work but to be honest this still feels very much like beta software.

Folks who are experiencing issues...
We're actively looking into why some ringtones would play, and some not. We thought we had this issue nailed, but apparently not.
Anyone who is having issues, please contact our support at:

...because the more information we can gather, the more likely it is we'll be able to figure out the problem and solve it! :)

It doesn't seem very cost effective to pay $15 for a program if you are only going to make a few ringtones. You could buy your favorite songs that you already own and make them ringtones for under $2. If you want to make a ton of them, that's a different story, but for those who just want 3 or 4 different tones, I'd just buy them from iTunes, despite the lunacy of the whole thing.

Maybe you should give us a license code...since we're pretty much beta testing this for ya =)
Seriously though. C'mon.
No. Really.
In all seriousness. Keep up the good work!
