Rumors: Nullriver to update iPhone Installer.app to 3.0
Shaun Erickson at psmxy.org has posted that Nullriver looks set to release the next major update of Installer.app. Installer.app is a program that runs on your iPhone or iPod touch and allows you to download software directly to your unit. He writes that version 3.0 should be released soon, perhaps as early as today. The updated features will include a redesigned interface, collapsed groupings (for less scrolling), new categories including "Recent" and local "More Info" pages--so you don't have to keep switching between Installer and Safari.Update: It's out. Click "Update" in Installer.app. It is, be aware, slow as molasses trying to get through along with the thousands of others doing the same. You must run Installer.app from /Applications--my first attempt using it from /Widgets linked to ~/Applications failed.

Isn't it already version 3.1 or is that just the mapplication that puts it on the iPhone?
# iTunes 7.4 or later: Download v3.1
# older iTunes versions: Download v2.4

@Gary - The Installer.app installer is at version 3.1, but the Installer.app itself is not.

I believe 1.1.1 compatible is half the point of the update. I would imagine this app will detect whether you're using 1.1.1 or not and display only compatible apps. That's just my guess as to what it SHOULD do.

Sprinkle a little patience on this post, and it could have fallen into the "breaking news" category, instead of the "rumors" category. And the answers to the commenters could be available.
But, alas, confusion abounds.

I believe this version is designed to NOT work on Edwards iPhone. Sorry about that.

Good news Edwards. I tested it on your iPhone and yes it works fine. Left it on your kitchen table.

It seems to be here already. It downloaded itself and installed on my phone. Looks good. It says it is recommended for 1.1.1 only. Seems I now need to uninstall it (still on 1.0.2)

3.0b3 is already out but uses a new back-end which is optimized for firmware 1.1.1. I did install it on my 1.0.2 and it works fine so far.
@ nubrandon; maybe it has something to do with the slow connection to the nullriver website. Installer.app is also slow and sometimes "hangs". This is due the connection, it is not the program itself here.

Apps been hanging for 30 minutes. Force quit and restart are not working. No data being transfered. Still at 1.0.2. Tears starting to fall.

So...how exactly does this work?
My firmware is 1.0.2. Do i install the new version of Installer.app, then upgrade my phone to firmware 1.1.1 and, unlike before, it will survive the upgrade and let me install programs? And if so, do i need to uninstall all the other programs/summerboard themes to clean things up and then reinstall them all on 1.1.1? or just leave everything intact and the phone will recognize everything upon upgrading to 1.1.1?
I'm wary to try jailbreaking 1.1.1 until a one-click solution with a GUI is put out there.
Can someone explain step by step for us novices how to go about this?

How about Nullriver updates PSPware like they promised for people who actually paid for the product rather than this free stuff which will just break again next month.
(OMG WHO DARES MENTION A SONY PRODUCT IN AN iPHONE POST)

So I have yet to update to firmware 1.1.1. Do I need to uninstall everything BEFORE I update my firmware?
What is the best order in which to do the update. My phone has never been Unlocked but it obviously has been app.tapped
