Instant Jailbreak for iPhone and iPod touch
A crew of hackers (including hdm/metasploit, rezn, dinopio, drudge, kroo, pumpkin, davidc, dunham, and NerveGas) have introduced a one-touch instant jailbreak for both iPhone and iPod touch. The jailbreak opens your iPhone for full disk access and installs Installer.app so you can add pretty much any third party application you like.
To use it, open Safari and point your browser to jailbreakme.com (which we aren't linking to so folks won't install this by accident, but you are prompted to confirm). Once there, read the directions, scroll to the bottom, and tap Install AppSnapp. If Safari disappears and you return to the main Home screen, you're good. Just wait a minute more for your unit to restart--don't touch anything until you see the slide to unlock screen. If Safari hangs, just quit out (press and hold Home for 4-8 seconds) and try again.
Once you get to slide-to-unlock, go ahead and unlock your iPhone or iPod touch. You'll return to your home screen which will contain a new Installer.app icon. If you'll want to ssh into your unit, install the BSD subsystem, Community Sources, and then install Open SSH--you may need to upgrade Installer.app (thanks Ste). With Open SSH and sshfs (part of Mac Fuse), you can open Finder windows that offer direct drag and drop access to your phone or touch.
The jailbreak really is as easy as it sounds. I restored my iPod touch and jailbroke it just a few minutes ago and it worked great.
UPDATE: Please try to do this using WiFi rather than EDGE. Success rates are much higher!

can't you just wait until february? its not as much that you are impatient as it is that apple will update the software and brick your iphones. its a near-perfect phone as it is and as soon as the update breaks your phone you and the hackers will complain and have to start over again.

Hi,
Sorry to trouble you..ive just bought myself an ipod touch and im interested in jailbreaking to get extra apps, but you mentioned to somebody wait until february does this mean that apple are going to update the ipod touch to use these extra apps anyway?
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

Erica,
I want to jailbreak my iPhone. I do not wish to unlock it. I already activated it and have sync'd it using iTunes. Will I be able to update my iPhone after I jailbreak it? What happens when I synce it with iTunes after I jailbreak it? Will I no longer be able to use iTunes?
Thanks,

lets see, wait until february where, most likely, you will have to pay an arm and leg for simple apps such as a TODO list. Or, install stuff now and get the most out of your iphone...

I really want to try this, but I am afraid of bricking the thing. A restore will unjailbreak it, which is good, but what other chance is there of bricking using this procedure?

If we are talking about the iPhone - It may Jailbreak it but it won't activate it so unless its already been jailbreaked it won't help will it?
Second of all - If your phone is already Jailbreaked and you tried this- would it mess it up?
What does it do? Jailbreak it and patch the springboard and then install installer? Like I said what if this has already been done?
What if it already has media on it and it is not a clean slate?
I used independence to JB/activate my iphone but it won't work with Installer - something always goes wrong with it! SO I am wondering if this method may help me - but as it is already JB'd I don't want to mess it up!

i jailbroke my touch just a day or two after hackers made it possible, but i'm really really glad someone came up with this so if anything gets screwed up i won't have to go through the entire process again

Wow, Erica.. not to be mean but you really need to proof read your articles before posting them. Nearly all your articles have grammatical errors, and are chock full of awkard and run-on sentences.
